Pittsburgh Steelers hint at winner of CB competition between promising rookie and gritty veteran

PITTSBURGH - The Pittsburgh Steelers have a decision to make at slot cornerback with Beanie Bishop and Cam Sutton each duking it out over the last week. Sutton returns from a suspension for violating the NFL personal conduct policy.

While the Steelers have looked at what Sutton will do, head coach Mike Tomlin hinted that others in the secondary other than Bishop would have to worry about their roles. Sutton can play outside, in the slot, safety, and at dimebacker, which are all places he could see playing time.

"That's to be determined," Tomlin said. "But that's one of things that makes Cam so interesting and valuable to us. He is a utility back. His football intellect and physical capabilities are as such that he can play anywhere, and has, to be quite honest with you."

Meanwhile, defensive coordinator Teryl Austin seemed very complimentary of Bishop's performance. Bishop will certainly play, mainly because the Steelers saw his growth over the last few weeks.

"We like where Beanie is, and Beanie has to continue to write his story," Austin said. "We're only halfway through his rookie season. I'm not going to Beanie the keys to the car and say he's arrived and stuff. He's got to continue to work and continue to earn his opportunity to play. That's where we are with Beanie... that's why I expect to see him out there."

It sounds like Bishop will continue to have a significant role and potentially start in the slot. If that is the case, the rookie will have earned it with three interceptions over their last two games, but bigger tests are coming in the form of the Commanders.
