Safety tips as rain hampers travel conditions in Dayton
DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) — Wet and slick conditions are a good visual reminder for drivers to slow down and give themselves extra time on their commutes.
Already we've seen multiple crashes this morning on the roads.
While these incidents are under investigation and cannot at this time be solely blamed on the rain, these conditions have certainly exacerbated a more intense commute this morning.
Earlier this morning all northbound lanes on I-75 were blocked by a semi along the interstate.
According to Montgomery County Regional Dispatch, the crash occurred minutes after 2:30 a.m. on I-75 N. and North Main Street. Lanes were blocked for a bit over an hour but have since reopened.
There is no word on injuries to the semi driver at the time of writing.
Around 6:12 a.m. a home was struck by a vehicle, initiating an investigation by several area crews, according to the Montgomery County Regional Dispatch Center. The crash occurred on the 5300 block of Woodbine Avenue.
Experts at AAA are reminding drivers to keep clear steering distance from the vehicle in front, as brake times are increased. Drivers are also advised to avoid turning and slowing down suddenly to prevent hydroplaning.
"When the conditions on the highway change your speed needs to change appropriately. You don't want to take a curve on a rural highway as fast as you usually do during dry conditions because chances are you could lose control of the vehicle and skid off the road." says Danny Straessle, transportation expert.
Experts also say to check that windshield wipers are working accurately and that tire tread is up to standard.
