SUMMIT COUNTY, Ohio — Summit County voters on Tuesday decided several key races and issues, among them: the Summit County Children's Services tax levy renewal, Summit County Council races and the Akron Public Schools combined bond issue and tax levy. In Summit County, voter turnout was high, even for a year with a presidential election. Some 71.16% of the county's registered voters (272,359) cast their votes in the election, according to unofficial results from the Summit County Board of Elections. Summit County Children Services tax levy Some 62.74% of voters (158,438) approved Issue 40, a renewal of the existing operating tax levy for Summit County Children Services. The tax levy will provide 60% of the agency's budget. It will raise $40.9 million each year for six years. Because the tax levy is a renewal, it will not cost residents more money. The tax levy will cost the owner of a $100,000 home $68 a year. Summit County Council races Voters decided several Summit County Council district races, with incumbent candidates winning their races. Those elected will serve four-year terms, beginning Jan. 1, 2025.County Council (District 1) Rita Darrow (incumbent): 56.52% (20,972) Yulia Gray: 43.48% (16,136)County Council (District 3) David A. Kacyon (incumbent): 54.61% (17,693) Matt Shaughnessy: 45.39% (14,707) Akron Public Schools combined bond issue and tax levy Voters overwhelmingly (57.72%) approved the combined bond issue and tax levy for Akron Public Schools, according to unofficial results from the Summit County Board of Elections. The 7.6-mill operating levy will help pay for the district's daily expenditures, and the 1.3-mill bond issue will pay for a new $85 million building for North High School. The tax increase amounts to $312 a year per $100,000 of home value - $266 for operating expenses and $46 to cover payments on bonds over 35 years for the $85 million construction project. The main part of North High School was built in 1931, according to the district website.Issue 41 Voters approved Issue 41, with 54.12% (124,936) voting in favor of the charter amendment. Under the existing charter, certain familial relatives of classified employees making $80,000 or more per year are prohibited from county employment. Issue 41 clarifies that the requirement only applies to county charter offices. The amendment adds aunts and uncles to the people who are prohibited from employment at county charter offices. The amendment also removes the $80,000 salary cap, which was set in 2006, according to the county.Issue 42 Some 57.15% of voters (133,930) decided against Issue 42, a proposed charter amendment that would have required county offices to submit estimates and revenues on a yearly basis instead of quarterly. Tax levies that voters approved include:Lakemore Village proposed tax levy replacement Coventry Township proposed tax levy (replacement and decrease) Northfield Center Township proposed tax levy replacement and decrease Springfield Township proposed tax levy replacement and decrease Tax levies that voters declined include:Lakemore Village proposed tax levy replacement and increase Twinsburg Township proposed tax levy additional School tax levies The Aurora City School District proposed bond issue resulted in a tie, with 250 voters in favor of the bond issue and 250 voting against it with all precincts reporting, according to unofficial results from the Summit County Board of Elections. Springfield Local School District, which is currently under fiscal watch, had three renewal tax levies on the ballot: Voters narrowly approved the first two renewal tax levies but declined the third, according to unofficial results from the Summit County Board of Elections.
