SERGEANT BLUFF, Iowa (KCAU) — School officials in the Sergeant Bluff-Luton Community School District are hoping to end a streak of six consecutive failed school bond measures on Election Day.

The district is proposing a three-phase improvement plan this time. It includes downscaled projects and carries less of a tax burden.

A small group gathered Wednesday evening for the third of four learning sessions about the referendum. The total project cost is around $54 million. The first phase includes the construction of a pre-K through 2nd grade addition to the elementary school, as well as other upgrades at the high school.

"So when we stop using that facility and we replace the aging infrastructure at the high school, heating and cooling and so on, we've eliminated a lot of ongoing costs for our school district," superintendent Chad Jenzen said.

Each of the three phases in the plan would be voted on approximately every five years. Janzen says no additional tax increase is projected for phases two and three.
