Shirley A. Weitzel

Shirley A. Weitzel, 89, of Wyomissing, passed away on Wednesday, November 13, 2024, in the care of Berks Heim. She was the loving widow of Ronald N. Weitzel, who passed away on April 11, 2022, after 67 years together.

Born in West Reading to the late Harry J. and Bertha (Ritz) Wanner, she was a 1953 graduate of Wyomissing High School. Shirley worked in the business office of Bell Telephone from 1955 to 1957 before leaving the workforce to raise her three beloved children. Once her children were more independent, she took a part-time job with Whitmer's Department Store of Penn Street before accepting a role as a student accounts cashier for Albright College. She retired in 1997 after 15 years with Albright.

Shirley was a member of the Junior Chamber of Commerce Wives since 1966 and served as a former president.

She was an active member of St. Thomas U.C.C., Reading, where she served as a Sunday School Teacher for 25 years and sang with the choir since 1955. She later joined St. John's Reformed Church after St. Thomas's closure.

Left to treasure Shirley' memory are her children: Sandra L. Weitzel of Wyomissing; Marjorie A. Kern of Mohnton; and Steven R. Weitzel of Exeter; grandchildren: Zachary Kern, Tyler Kern, Paul M. Weitzel, and Alexandra G. Weitzel; and one great granddaughter, Kennedy Claire Kern. She is also survived by several nieces, nephews, and their families. In addition to her husband and parents, Shirley was predeceased by her stepsister, Yvonne Marcus, who is survived by her daughter, Cathy Marcus.

A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, November 20, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. at the Edward J. Kuhn Funeral Home, Inc, 739 Penn Avenue, West Reading, with burial to follow at Laureldale Cemetery. Friends of the family may visit from 10:00 a.m. until the start of services.
