Small college roundup: Plotner powers Presidents to victory

Noah Plotner, a 6-7 sophomore forward, had a huge game, scoring 29 points and grabbing 21 rebounds, powering Washington & Jefferson to an 80-73 victory over Baldwin Wallace in the Presidents' home opener Tuesday night.

Plotner made 12 of 19 shots in the game. He scored 13 points in the first half, which ended with W&J ahead 36-26.

The Presidents had a huge edge on the boards, outrebounding BW, 51-36. W&J also won the game by getting to the free-throw line, where it was 13-for-21 compared to Baldwin Wallace's 3-for-3.

Matt Seidel scored 13 points for the Presidents and Matthew Carte chipped in with 12.

Pitt-Greensburg 83, Waynesburg 68

Matthew Marinchak scored a game-high 29 points and Pitt-Greensburg blitzed visiting Waynesburg in the second half ro an 83-68 non-conference win.

UPG trailed 41-38 at halftime but outscored the Yellow Jackets (0-2) by a 45-27 margin in the second half.

Marinchak made seven of UPG's 11 three-point baskets.

P.J. Suggs led Waynesburg in scoring with 19 points, including 13 in the first half. Scott Bolovus had 11 of his 13 points in the opening half.

Antone Baker scored 13 for the Yellow Jackets. Rayshod Hooper had 10 rebounds.

Women's results

Waynesburg 74, Hood 60

Kalista Friday scored 24 points as Waynesburg rolled to a 74-60 win over host Hood.

Waynesburg improved to 2-0 and has won four straight dating back to last season.

The Yellow Jackets scorched Hood early. Waynesburg made 11 three-point field goals in the first half, which ended with the Yellow Jackets leading 41-21.

Friday also had five assists and five steals. Liv Ammons was the only other Waynesburg player in double figures. She had 12 points. The Yellow Jackets shot 58 percent from the field in the first half and forced 15 Hood turnovers. Waynesburg was 11-for-14 from three-point range in the opening half.

Bowie State 60, California 53

Destiny Ryles scored a game-high 24 points, making 14 of 16 free throws and leading Bowie State to a 60-53 victory over host California in a non-conference game.

The loss was the first of the season for Cal (2-1), which shot only 30.5 percent from the field and was held to 17 points over the middle two quarters.

Bowie State (1-0) trailed 13-11 after one quarter but moved out to a 29-20 lead after outscoring the Vulcans 18-7 in the pivotal second quarter. Bowie State stretched its lead to 48-30 at the end of three quarters and led by 20 in the first minute of the final period.

Cal, which made only five of 28 shots over the second and third quarters, mounted a late rally and closed to within 57-53 with 1:25 remaining, when Iyahnna Williams made a jump shot. That, however, was as close as the Vulcans would get as Ryles made three free throws down the stretch.

Alicia Young led Cal with 17 points. Allycia Harris had a big game with 16 rebounds, 11 points and three blocked shots. Williams finished with 11 points.
