State report reveals cause of death for Shelby County inmate

AUSTIN, Texas (KTRE) - The cause of death for a Shelby County inmate has been revealed. Jose Goevava, 24, was found dead in his Shelby County Jail cell on Oct. 5. He had been booked into the jail earlier that day on a charge of assault family violence. A state custodial death report from the Texas Attorney General's Office was released Tuesday, saying Goevava died by hanging himself. According to the report, Goevava was found hanging in the holding cell about an hour after he was brought in. Medical intervention began before EMS arrived, and he was pronounced dead at a nearby emergency center at 9:50 p.m. Related: Shelby County inmate found unresponsive in holding cell
