Suspect chased by cows in Hambleton during run from police

A man running away from police found himself being "chased by cows" before being arrested, officers said.

The man came to the attention of police after reports of a vehicle on fire in North Deighton, Harrogate, early on 3 November, according to the North Yorkshire force.

Police tracked the man and two others to a VW Polo on the A168 near Hambleton which refused to stop, even after officers used a stinger to puncture the vehicle's tyres.

Two of the suspects later ran away with one having "a brief encounter with some curious cows", officers said.

Police said the driver, aged 22 from Eston in Cleveland, was apprehended at the scene and registration plates from the burnt-out car, a machete, and a petrol container were recovered from the Polo.

He was arrested on suspicion of failing to stop for police, dangerous driving, driving without insurance, being equipped to steal, possession of an offensive weapon, and arson.

The man pursued by cows was located by a police dog and detained.

The 19-year-old, from Normanby, Cleveland, was arrested on suspicion of being equipped to steal, possession of an offensive weapon, possession of a Class B drug and arson.

A third man is still being sought.

The force said the two men arrested had since been released on conditional bail while investigations continued.
