Tuscaloosa Education Foundation Kicks Off Fundraising Campaign
TUSCALOOSA, AL — The Tuscaloosa Education Foundation (TEF) on Monday kicked off its annual giving campaign by urging community members to rally behind local schools after the defeat of property tax referendums over the last couple of years that would have increased funding for education.
{p/p}TEF Executive Director Caroline Lasseter praised the commitment of volunteers and donors who support programs such as Reading Allies and teacher grants, pointing to the role they play in enhancing education.
"Our schools are going to need support now more than ever, and that is where TEF comes in," campaign co-chairs Pamela H. Pruitt and Dr. Robert E. Witt wrote in a public letter. "With the defeats in the rearview mirror, we must still commit to our children and our future."
The foundation, which supports both Tuscaloosa city and county schools, focuses on four pillars: literacy, character, elevating educators, and career pathways.
TEF is asking for donations through its website or by mail, with options to designate funds for specific programs or general use.
Organizers suggest that community members consider the cost of the rejected property tax proposal as a guideline for contributions — roughly $100 annually for a $100,000 home.
"The foundation's mission has always been to put our children first," Lasseter said. "Now is the time to invest in TEF and ensure a brighter future for Tuscaloosa."
