JACKSON, Mich. (WILX) - The Jackson County Sheriff's Office has shared a video of a man who they attempted to stop while on a lawnmower, who ended up shooting himself in the hand.

On Sept. 19, Deputy Robert Henderson arrived at a home in Leoni Township to arrest James Mitchell Kerr, 41, on a felony warrant for violating probation and two misdemeanor warrants.

Kerr was on a riding lawnmower when Deputy Henderson started speaking with him. Deputy Henderson asked Kerr to get off the lawnmower, which he refused.

Instead, Kerr accelerated in an attempt to flee. Deputy Henderson chased after him on foot, and as the lawnmower came to rest in a small ditch, he ordered Kerr to comply or he would be Tased.

Kerr continued to ignore the deputy's command. He instead went back to the mower, drew a handgun that was hidden on the mower, and pointed it at the deputy.

Deputy Henderson then deployed his Taser, hitting Kerr, which caused Kerr to shoot himself in the hand.

Kerr was taken into custody once backup arrived. He was taken to the hospital to be treated for the gunshot before being released on bail.

Jackson County Sheriff Gary Schuette requested the Michigan State Police conduct an independent criminal investigation while the Sheriff's Office conducted an internal investigation. The internal investigation found no policy violations occurred.

On Oct. 23, the Jackson County Prosecuting Attorney charged Kerr with:

  • Assault with Intent to Murder
  • Felony Firearm
  • Resisting and Obstructing
  • Kerr went before Judge Michael Klaren for a preliminary exam on Nov. 13 where he was bound over for trial in circuit court. He remains in Jackson County Jail.

"This incident underscores how rapidly a seemingly routine encounter can escalate and the potential dangers deputies face daily," the Jackson County Sheriff's Office said. "Thankfully, the deputy was unharmed, and the suspect did not sustain serious injuries."
