Washout rain this morning, better weekend ahead
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (WBTW) — Yesterday's main weather headline was abnormally warm temperatures. Lumberton tied the high-temperature record for November 6 at 85 degrees, this record set back in 2022. Today's headline is the rain.
Excessive rainfall began yesterday evening in the Midlands and more than 13.5 inches of rain in Saint Matthews (Calhoun County) in a little more than 12 hours (as of 5 a.m.). Rainfall for our region has been manageable and not as heavy. Rainfall will continue to be widespread through the morning, scattered in the afternoon, and isolated during the evening. Highs will be in the mid-70s.
Rain will likely be close to 0.5′′ along the coast and borderbelt. The Pee Dee has a higher chance of seeing more rain around 1-1.5′′. Rainfall records are likely safe for today with records around 1.7′′, 1.5′′, and 2′′ for North Myrtle Beach, Florence, and Lumberton, respectively.
Rain will not continue into the overnight hours. The rain is expected to end between 7-9 p.m. which is good news for the CCU and App State game in Brooks Stadium tonight. Kickoff is at 8 p.m. with temperatures around 70.
Tomorrow will be partly sunny with an isolated shower. Temperatures will increase back to the upper 70s. It will be a slightly cooler weekend back in the mid-70s. Scattered showers are back in the forecast Sunday night into portions of Veteran's Day, but it will not be a washout like today.
Out in the tropics, Rafael is still a Category 2 hurricane with winds of 105 mph. Landfall occurred yesterday afternoon in western Cuba in the province of Artemisa with winds of 115 mph. Now as it is in the Gulf of Mexico it will turn almost due west.
This means that the United States is less likely to see a landfall. A west and then south track will bring direct impacts into Mexico.
