Another gloomy day with not much rain to show for it Thursday; fire dangers still high

C.Chen32 min ago

Thursday will be a split forecast kind of day as a stationary front slowly works southeast through the region. For the morning, our northern counties will see more clouds than not with passing light showers from time to time. As the system drifts south we'll see showers move with it giving our southern counties more clouds and a light sprinkle or two.

The system overall fades as it moves south so the clear winners of the rain today will be our northern counties. However, less than a quarter of an inch of rain certainly doesn't help with active brushfires.

While the rain comes to an end, we'll be left with mostly cloudy skies tonight. Mist will be possible for those on the mountain tops with those clouds hanging low. With cooler air moving in on light northwest winds, dense fog will be an issue for overnight drivers and pre-dawn Friday morning commuters. Temps hover in the 50s for lows.

Friday morning will be a very foggy on for the mountains and river valleys. Those that see rain on Thursday will also deal with patchy fog with morning temps in the 50s. We'll see sunshine after a while but it'll take most of the morning. Add in north winds temps struggle into the low to mid 60s for highs.

Friday night, with clear skies and a weak front pushing through, temps tumble quickly after sunset. By the overnight hours, we'll be in the mid and upper 30s for lows.

Saturday, for most of us will be a dry day with sunshine. Our next system is expected to arrive late into the night so a few clouds will filter in throughout the day. Partly cloudy skies can be expected for our western counties late Saturday afternoon as highs struggle into the 60s for most. After sunset, a light sprinkle for our southwestern counties is possible but most of us will have to wait until Sunday morning for beneficial rains to move in. Overnight lows remain in the 40s with the extra clouds building in.

Sunday morning will be gloomy one with steady showers pushing in thanks to a lifting warm front. Showers will become more scattered for the afternoon as we settle into a drier slot before a cold front arrives late Sunday night. The brief break may provide some glimpse of sunshine, but will quickly be taken over by clouds and more showers into the evening hours. Rain pushes in from west to east with some heavy showers after midnight. The cold front will push out by Monday morning.

Veterans Day, Monday will features left over clouds from Sunday's system with light showers, especially for the eastern mountains. Slow clearing is expected so hopefully morning parades will be ok. With mostly cloudy skies for most of the morning, temps are slow to move with highs only in the low to mid 60s. Monday evening will see more clearing than not as lows dip into the mid 40s.

Tuesday is sunny overall with fair weather clouds filtering in and out. Highs are cooler with northwest breezes struggling into the low 60s.

Wednesday is a more typical November day with sunshine and light breezes. Highs are slow to move but manage the low 60s by the late afternoon. Evening temps drop quickly with clear skies with lows in the 40s.

In your extended forecast, we find ourself on the colder and more unsettle side of our jet stream which is both good and bad news. The good news is some needed rain to help combat our growing brush fire count, but cold nights could bring some icing issues as lows dip back closer to average. For this time of year, average overnight lows in Beckley are in the upper 30s and low 40s. Despite this, we'll still have a day or two thrown in where daytime highs still manage the 60s.
