According to the National Day Calendar, nachos were first created around 1943 and were created by Ignacio "Nacho" Anaya. Nacho was the maître d' at the El Moderno Restaurant in Piedras Negras.
A group of U.S. Army wives came into the restaurant after the kitchen staff had left and wanted a snack. Anaya prepared some tostadas cut into triangles, topped them with shredded cheese, and sliced jalapenos, and heated the dish in the oven. They were such a hit to the point where the Army wives named the snack "Nacho's Special."
