WICHITA FALLS ( KFDX/KJTL ) — Mayor Tim Short has declared September 21 "Recovery Day."

Wichita Falls Treatment Services, off of 3rd and Broad St., is the only clinic of its kind within a 2-hour radius. Over its 5-year history in the city, Program Director JoJo Torres and the rest of the clinic staff have helped hundreds of patients fight their opioid addiction.

"We are celebrating today everybody who we are currently seeing and anybody who could possibly need to come into services, their journey into recovery," Torres said. "For all those who have been lost, for everybody who's ready to start but might be afraid, we're throwing a celebration to invite them out."

Several vendors came out to participate in the Recovery Day celebrations, and one of them happens to be a long-time patient of Wichita Falls Treatment Services. Kassandra Romero sought out the clinic for treatment for her own addiction 5 years ago.

"When I came in, I was using every day," Romero said. "I was going out there, I was spending almost $100 a day to look for pills, hoping that they weren't fake."

"I came a long way through this center," Romero said. "They've helped me; they do random drug tests, and they give you phases. It's a really good place to go to."

Though the recovery process is important with the opioid epidemic affecting millions of people all over the country, getting people to seek help in the first place is a different issue. Torres hopes the declaration of Recovery Day inspires people to seek the help they need.

"Recovery is hard. It's not something that you should try to do alone," Torres said. "It's important to have a support system. And you know, outside of us, we definitely offer that. But it's good to know who you have in your community that's there and willing to stand up for you and stand behind you."

With the first Recovery Day in the books, Wichita Falls Treatment Services is taking strong steps to end opioid addiction across Texoma.
