Oct. 17—WILLIAMSBURG — At the Williamsburg Independent School Board meeting on Tuesday, several items were discussed, including special recognition of staff, an update on academic performance and the district's facility planning.

Superintendent Tabitha Housekeeper kicked off the meeting with a heartfelt recognition of three outstanding staff members.

"Ms. Sherry Reed embodies what we are looking for in all teachers at Williamsburg," said Housekeeper.

Reed was praised for her ability to connect with students and staff, showing up each day with "a smile, a joke to share, and hugs for her students." Her efforts to help students become critical thinkers were highlighted as well.

Next, Director of Nutrition Dina Davis was acknowledged for her dedication. One staff member noted in their letter to the BOE, "Dina Davis is a rock star," and her efforts to provide nutritious meals and new snack options were widely appreciated. "Students are raving about how much they enjoy them."

The final recognition went to Jan Johnston, a financial advisor from Northern Kentucky, who has contributed greatly to the district despite not being an official staff member.

Officials describe Johnston as "an angel dropped from heaven," saying she goes above and beyond, helping with everything from financial records to supporting the district through tough times.

The board then moved on to Superintendent and Principal updates. Housekeeper emphasized that her focus this year would be on improving instruction.

"Culture is my jam, but I'm ready to dive into instruction," she said, outlining plans for district learning walks and increased classroom support for teachers.

Academic performance was reviewed, with detailed data presented by Josh Taylor. Taylor noted improvements in certain areas, such as an increase in the school's quality score and postsecondary readiness.

However, he acknowledged areas where growth is needed, particularly in science and social studies.

"We've already begun strategizing and rebuilding strategic plans to address these areas," Taylor said.

Steven Moses, the elementary school assistant principal, praised the board's support and the dedication of teachers. He also highlighted a focus on professional development for science and social studies to improve performance in those subjects.

"We are hitting the ground running this year," Moses said, thanking the board for providing the resources needed for continued growth.

The board also discussed the ongoing district facility plan, which will include hiring an architect to oversee updates. The board agreed to hire Deco Architects for the job.

Additionally, a local planning committee was established, with board member Donnie Patrick volunteering to serve as the BOE representative, and Mayor Roddy Harrison as the city official representative.
