Woman shot at Birmingham apartment where another woman was killed in shootout

A woman was wounded when a fight led to gunfire Sunday at an east Birmingham apartment complex.

Shots rang out about 4:15 p.m. in the parking lot of Monarch Ridge Apartments, formerly known as Valley Brook Apartment.

That is the same complex where an chaotic shooting in August led to the death of Asia Alyce Poole, a 21-year-old woman, and the wounding of her friend after hundreds of shots were fired. Much of the August shooting was livestreamed.

Officer Truman Fitzgerald said the injured woman sustained non-life-threatening injuries. Initial reports of a child shot turned out to be false.

The shooting started out as people fighting. Shots between two groups of people then erupted.

Witnesses reported hearing possibly dozens of shots fired.

The City of Birmingham previously sued the apartment complex and said it had not been in compliance with agreed-upon security updates.

Fitzgerald said since August, the complex has brought their camera system into compliance, which is helping BPD's Real Time Crime Center in this investigation and others.

No arrests have been made in Sunday's shooting.

Anyone with information is asked to call detectives at 205-254-1764 or Crime Stoppers at 205-254-7777.
