‘Back to School Jamboree’ gives Peoria residents a different look at the police

PEORIA, Ill. (WMBD) — Dozens gathered Thursday evening at Franklin Primary School for a little fun in the sun.

A 'Back to School Jamboree' was held by the Neighborhood Services Unit in the Peoria Police Department, designed for officers to talk with community members, as well as showcase resources.

Stevie Hughes is a sergeant with the unit, and said it's a great way for the police to meet with the people they serve.

"We're not answering calls, we're not going out on burglaries or car thefts or any of that nonsense. We're here to meet the community at their level, see what the issues are, or just have fun with them," he said.

Free food was provided, and represented organizations included the Peoria Park District, Peoria Public Schools, and the Boys and Girls Club of Peoria.

School supplies were handed out, as well as t-shirts.

The children also got a chance to hop around in a bouncy house and sink one of their teachers in a dunk tank.

Hughes said this was the unit's second to last outdoor event of the year and they will transition to indoor events once the weather cools down.
