Before it was noon, Phoenix broke the record for heat on this date. Here's what's coming this week

Phoenix broke the daily high record before noon Sunday extending a late September record-setting heat wave.

The temperature climbed to 108 degrees shortly after 11 a.m., surpassing the old record of 107 degrees set in 2003, the National Weather Service in Phoenix reported.

Sunday's record extends a week of record-breaking temperatures expected to last through the first week of October.

On Saturday, the temperature hit 117 degrees, breaking the previous daily high record of 108 degrees set in 1992.

The record for Sept. 29 likely will go higher as temperatures climb throughout the afternoon. The forecast calls for a high of 112. The average normal high for this date is 96 degrees, the weather service said on X.

An excessive heat warning remains in effect through Oct. 4, with the daily high forecast to hit 109 onMonday, 111 on Tuesday, 109 on Wednesday and Thursday, and 110 on Friday, the weather service said.

Phoenix also broke a record overnight, when the low was 88 degrees, six degrees above the previous record-warm low of 82, the weather service said.
