Clifton Suspension Bridge leaving X prompts online puns

Clifton Suspension Bridge in Bristol announcing it is leaving social media site X has prompted thousands of comments as people found humour in the decision.

The bridge, designed by famous engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel, spans the Avon Gorge linking the city to North Somerset.

In a post on X, the bridge said the platform had been a "wonderful place" to engage with its audience for 15 years but "recent changes" since the platform was taken over by Elon Musk had made bosses reconsider.

"That's a bridge too far," was the most common comment on X.

The bridge account, which has 10,000 followers, had been used to share traffic updates and closure warnings with motorists in Bristol.

"With the rise of inappropriate content and decrease in meaningful engagement with our followers, we have chosen to no longer post to this account," it said.

The bridge is not the only organisation announcing it is leaving X, which was bought by billionaire Mr Musk in 2022.

The Guardian newspaper announced this week it will no longer post saying it has become "a toxic media platform" .

Mr Musk strongly backed Donald Trump and has now been given a role cutting government spending in his incoming administration.

The Clifton Suspension Bridge's post has been seen by more than 1.9 million people with thousands of engagements.

It has caused the bridge, which was opened in 1864 , to trend on X.

The thousands of replies feature people commenting bridge related puns like "are you suspending your account?" and that the site was "burning bridges".

Another reply said: "Anxiously awaiting news from Scotland now - or will the Forth Rail Bridge decide it cantilever?"
