In today's community conversations, a representative of El Paso Electric joins the KFOX14 morning news to talk about smart meters.

Grisel Ramirez said utilities use smart meters to communicate more about their usage to customers.

Ramirez said El Paso Electric has installed over 375,000 meters in the El Paso region and they expect to finalize the installation by the end of the summer of 2025.

Customers will have smart meters installed all the way from Van Horn to Hatch, New Mexico.

"The installation takes about 10-15 minutes," said Ramirez.

The El Paso Electric comprehensive intiaitve began in May 2023 to deploy about 500,000 smart meters to homes and businesses.

Below are the benefits of the Smart Meter according to El Paso Electric:

  • Customers can monitor their daily energy consumption in the Manage My Account portal on our website or by downloading the EPE app.
  • Customers can access near real-time energy consumption data, enabling them to track their energy use and make adjustments to save money and benefit the environment.
  • Smart meters streamline the process for starting, stopping or transferring electric service.
  • EPE is automatically alerted to power outages which enhances restoration times.
  • EPE can virtually monitor the electric grid and identify opportunities for preventative maintenance and infrastructure improvements.
  • Smart meters enable EPE to support and expand sustainability programs focused on renewable energy and electric vehicles and offer more rate and payment options.
  • Smart meters are designed to protect customer privacy. They cannot manage a customer's energy use or thermostat.

Customers have the right to opt out of the program. They will have to pay a one-time fee and fill out an application. Ramirez said you will have a monthly fee for opting out.
