Santa Monica Closes Bike, Pedestrian Gap In 3-Mile Station-To-Ocean Corridor

The new zig-zag route serves as an extension of the 3-mile Michigan Avenue Neighborhood Greenway to the east, closing the previous gap on Michigan Avenue — created when the 10 Freeway was constructed — from 20th Street to 21st Street.

The plan was meant to substantially reduce the walking and biking distances between the Pico neighborhood south of the 10 Freeway and the Bergamot area, encouraging short trips on foot and longer bike trips that use the Expo bike path.

The project includes a two-way protected bike lane on the east side of 20th Street; widened walkway and bike path on the north and south side of the 10 Freeway; and an upgraded bike signal, reconfigured crosswalk, curb ramps, landscaping, lighting and new fencing.

"The 20th Street Bike and Pedestrian project marks another step towards the city's strategic goal of a sustainable and connected city so that residents and visitors have more ways to get around safely," officials wrote.
