In the words of Louie Armstrong, "It's a glorious day, things are more than okay, and love makes me happy to say..."
This week, Champions of Youth Ambitions (C'YA) had the honor of being the hands of the community for our annual Veterans Day deliveries. The project culminated in many cards, letters, donations and pet treats brought to local veterans and a few sent via mail.
There were more than 25 individuals and two service organizations (The American Legion & The Veterans of Foreign Wars), that received items. There were toys, treats, clothes (yes dog clothes), food, blankets, and towels. We were also able to donate supplies to both the Los Alamos Animal Shelter and the Santa Fe Animal Shelter.
Barranca Principal Kristen Martines, Mountain Principal Megan Lee and Youth Activity Center (YAC) Director Bailey Martinez worked with their students and staff to create an outpouring of love for Veterans from children of the community. The students were as young as the Lion Pre-K 3 year olds to 3rd and 4th grade Bobcats and the third through eighth grade students at the YAC.
"Barranca Mesa 3rd and 4th grade students enjoyed showing appreciation and spreading cheer by making Veterans Day cards for all those who have served and are serving our country," Martines said.
"Thank you so much for the very thoughtful gifts and cards," Navy Veteran Phil Taylor said. "I've always enjoyed the creativity of kids, and it makes me hopeful for the future."
Our presentation of author Tony Wasowicz at Mesa Public Library received $80 in donations, and we went right out and purchased more goodies. We mailed one package to a Veteran who works in and around Los Alamos, and Ezra Maes, a retired Army soldier and Military Times 2021 Solider of the Year. The former Chamisa and Pinon student has been part of our program for many years, since learning he had been injured in an accident. Five years ago, he amputated his own leg to save his tank crew. Today, retired, happily engaged and surrounded by love and laughter.
Thank you to the community for your support. Our collection of cards and letters for local military serving across the nation is underway. You can mail them to PO Box 4741 White Rock, NM 87547. We also appreciate the donation of postage!
May God Bless our Troops and Veterans!
