Ellen Greenburg Case: Officials provide update on investigation

(WHTM)– The Chester County District Attorney's Office has placed its investigation into the 2011 death of Ellen Greenberg in inactive status due to the inability to prove a crime was committed.

The DA's office says that it cannot prove beyond a reasonable doubt that a crime was committed based on the current state of the investigation. Because there is no statute of limitations for criminal homicide in Pennsylvania, the DA's office will not close the case.

On Sept. 26, 2011, Greenberg, 27, was found dead by her fiance in the kitchen of her residence in Philadelphia with multiple stab wounds in her upper back and neck. Local police and the Philadelphia District Attorney's Office investigated the case, and after an autopsy, it was ruled a homicide. But, the ruling was changed to a suicide by the Philadelphia Medical Examiner's Office shortly after.

The Ellen Greenberg case gained statewide coverage after the ruling of Greenberg's death was changed from a homicide to a suicide.

In 2018, the investigation was turned over to the Pennsylvania District Attorney's office. Greenberg's parents publicly stated they wanted justice for the murder of their daughter and that she would never hurt herself or anyone else.

In order to avoid a conflict of interest, the Pennsylvania District Attorney's Office turned the case over to Chester County Detectives in 2022, said the Chester County DA's Office.

After a thorough review to determine if there was sufficient evidence to reopen the investigations, detectives concluded that they were unable to move forward with criminal charges and that the investigation is now inactive.
