Kyle Rekas To Be Sworn-In As Narragansett Police Chief On Friday
NARRAGANSETT, RI — Narragansett police have appointed Kyle Rekas as its next chief of the department.
Rekas, who currently serves as a police captain, will replace Police Chief Sean Corrigan, who is retiring after 28 years in law enforcement. Rekas will officially become chief at 3 p.m. Friday.
Rekas joined the Narragansett Police Department as a patrol officer in 1999, rising through the ranks as detective, patrol sergeant, patrol lieutenant and prosecution lieutenant to eventually become the department's administrative services captain in 2018. In this role, Rekas was responsible for managing the functions of the Narragansett Police Office of Professional Standards, accreditation management, policy and procedure development, law research, internal affairs, and training.
A police spokesperson said Rekas has earned several recognitions throughout his career at the department, including numerous citations issued by the RI House of Representatives and the RI Senate; numerous department letters of recognition and certificates of acknowledgment for excellence in police work; and the highest award bestowed by the Narragansett Police Department, a commendation for a rescuing a child from drowning in 2006.
"Taking over for Chief Corrigan will be no easy task," Rekas said. "He has been a tremendous leader over these past years and will be missed. I am absolutely honored to be named the chief of police in Narragansett; it is truly a dream come true, and I am looking forward to the challenge."
As Chief, Rekas said he plans to utilize his more than 25 years of experience to lead the department in making Narragansett a stronger and safer community and to continue to develop the vital relationship of mutual trust between the police department and the public.
"Kyle Rekas is a perfect fit for the role, and I have faith that he will excel as a strong leader in this position," Corrigan said. "His excellent communication and interpersonal skills, ability to handle high-pressure situations, and his capacity to relate to and respond effectively to community needs will undoubtedly serve him well as the new chief of the Narragansett Police Department. I wish him the best of luck and my full support as he begins this new chapter."
