MONTROSE, Colo. ( KREX ) — President of the Montrose Veteran's Memorial Coalition Les Williams served as a Marine for 32 years. He says the last veteran's memorial to be built in Montrose was 106 years ago.

The coalition is comprised of several organizations including the American Legion and Disabled American Vets.

The coalition is officially partnered with the City and County of Montrose to bring this dream to life.

City of Montrose Public Information Officer William Woody tells WesternSlopeNow crews should start to break ground next Spring on an undeveloped lot right next to the Montrose Botanical Gardens and Pavillion.

This project is estimated at the moment to cost somewhere around $500,000.

In order to raise that money, Williams tells WesternSlopeNow custom engraved bricks are on sale for $125 to honor any veteran of your choice, and the bricks will line the sidewalk of the new memorial. So far, the coalition has sold roughly 380 bricks, and several are left for purchase.

The new memorial will also feature seven engraved massive granite panels, a bronze eagle statue from a local artist, and retired military helicopter.
