Nov. 17 (UPI) - Two New York State patrol cars that had stopped a drunk driver were struck by another driver under the influence Friday night, the police said.

The incident occurred about midnight on Friday, according to a release from the New York State troopers.

Two officers in their respective cars were investigating a 2018 GMC Acadia that struck a Department of Transportation light tower in a work zone.

During that investigation on the Southern State Parkway near Babylon, a Toyota Rav 4 approached from behind, striking one patrol car that was pushed into the other patrol car parked in front of it.

Jaikaran Ramrookum, 73, who was driving the Rav 4, was charged with Driving Under the Influence.

Jared Robinson, 32, the driver of the Acadia and who was the reason for the initial stop was also driving under the influence, police said. They did not announce what charges he may be facing.

The drivers of both cars, as well as both troopers, sustained minor injuries and were taken to the hospital for evaluation. None were reported to be life-threatening.
