PENGUINS REPORT
NEXT GAME
FACEOFF: at St. John’s, Newfoundland, 6 p.m. (Eastern) on Thursday, Mile
One Arena.
TV/RADIO: The game can be heard on Oldies 92 and 100 FM. The radio
broadcast can also be accessed at the team’s Web site (www.wbspenguins.com).
NOTES AND QUOTES
SCRATCHED AGAIN: Wilkes-Barre/Scranton team captain RW Jason MacDonald
was scratched Saturday because of an abdominal strain, according to the team.
MacDonald also sat out of Friday’s 4-3 overtime victory at Quebec. Healthy
scratches for the Penguins on Saturday were C Alexandre Mathieu and LW Steve
Parsons. The team dressed all seven of its defensemen.
ABOUT FACE: Wilkes-Barre/Scranton coach Glenn Patrick had planned to play
Robbie Tallas on Friday in Quebec. It was part of a deal he had with his
goalies. If they won, they kept playing. If not, Patrick changed goalies. So
with Sebastien Caron in goal on Tuesday for a 4-3 overtime loss to Hershey, it
meant it was Tallas’ turn to play Friday. However, Caron is from Amqui,
Quebec, and the game against the Citadelles was a chance to play in front of a
lot of friends and relatives, so Patrick gave Caron the start. “My wife
talked me into it,” Patrick said. “She asked me `what if it was your son and
he had a chance to play near home?’ ” So Patrick relented and started Caron,
who was outstanding in the Penguins’ 4-3 overtime victory at Quebec. Since
Caron won, he also started Saturday at Albany, but was not nearly as sharp in
a 5-5 tie.
FIRST GOAL: Wilkes-Barre/Scranton D David Koci was all smiles Saturday
night after his first professional goal, which came at 11:34 of the first
period. He took a pass from RW Alexander Zevakhin, and fired a shot that went
through a maze of players and past Albany goalie J.F. Damphousse. “It was
great,” he said. “Zevy made a perfect pass to me and I just shot. The
feeling was great.”
THREE STARS: 1. Albany’s Brian Gionta, one goal, even; 2.
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton’s Tom Kostopoulos, two goals, plus-1; 3. Albany’s Ted
Drury, one goal, minus-1.
