POLICE NEWS: POLICE: Distracted driving causes buggy crash

Oct. 6—A Goshen man sustained life-threatening injuries following what investigators called a distracted driving crash in Middlebury Saturday morning.

Elkhart County deputies reported that at 9:14 a.m., Arlin Schlabach, 22, of Middlebury was traveling east on C.R. 28, near C.R. 133, in a 2012 Chevrolet Cruise and was using his phone so he did not see Matt Petersheim, 27, of Goshen driving a horse-drawn buggy heading the same direction.

Schlabach's vehicle struck the buggy and Petersheim was ejected from the buggy. Petersheim was hospitalized at South Bend Memorial Hospital with serious life-threatening injuries to the head and face resulting in temporary unconsciousness according to police.

Schlabach was cited for use of a telecommunications device while operating a moving motor vehicle.

HIT-AND-RUN

—John Bond, 58, of Goshen, reported to Goshen police at 6:43 p.m. Saturday that a dark blue truck backed into his Ford Explorer while it was parked at Chalet Party Shoppe, 245 Chicago Ave., and left the scene.

—Goshen police were called to a single-vehicle crash at 1:52 a.m. Sunday in the 600 block of North Main Street. According to police, two people fled from the vehicle following the rollover crash, but one 30-year-old man was hospitalized for treatment.

—Two men were arrested by Goshen police at 4:20 a.m. Saturday after a traffic stop was conducted near the intersection of Pike Street and New Street. An 18-year-old male driver was arrested on a charge of operating a vehicle while intoxicated, and a 23-year-old man was arrested on charges of dealing in cocaine, unlawful possession of a firearm, and possession of paraphernalia.

—A 46-year-old man was arrested by Goshen police at 2:01 p.m. Friday on a charge of operating a vehicle while intoxicated after police received a report of a reckless driver and stopped the accused vehicle near Elkhart Road and Reith Boulevard.

—A 24-year-old woman was arrested by Goshen police at 12:01 a.m. Saturday on charges of operating a vehicle while intoxicated and possession of marijuana and paraphernalia after she was stopped near the intersection of Elkhart Road and Riverside Boulevard.

—A 26-year-old woman was arrested by Goshen police at 2:42 a.m. Saturday on a charge of public nudity after police found her urinating in the 100 block of West Washington Street.

—Two men were arrested by Goshen police during a traffic stop at 3:23 a.m. Saturday at Jefferson Street and Fifth Street. A 20-year-old man was arrested on charges of possession of marijuana and paraphernalia, possession of a fake ID, and minor possession of alcohol, and a 19-year-old man was arrested on charges of operating a vehicle while intoxicated and illegal consumption of an alcoholic beverage.

—A 47-year-old man was arrested by Goshen police at 1:09 a.m. Saturday on a charge of operating a vehicle while intoxicated after police received a report of a slumped-over driver in a driveway in the 2000 block of Berkey Ave.

—Two men were arrested on Sunday after Goshen police were called to Barecito, 114 W. Jefferson St., for a report of two men fighting at 2:32 a.m.

A 33-year-old man was arrested on charges of robbery, possession of cocaine, resisting law enforcement, and disorderly conduct after police were called to Barecito, 114 W. Jefferson St., for a report of two men fighting. A 21-year-old man was arrested on on a charge of disorderly conduct but released at the scene pending a court date after both were treated for injuries.

—A 23-year-old man was arrested by Goshen police at 3:05 a.m. Sunday on charges of resisting law enforcement and disorderly conduct after police were called to El Imperial Botanero Bar, 113 S. Main St., for a report of a dispute out in front of the business. Police said the man fled from law enforcement was but later arrested.

—A 28-year-old man was arrested by Goshen police at 3:38 a.m. Sunday on charges of operating a vehicle while intoxicated and possession of marijuana after his vehicle was stopped at North Main Street and Mill Street while police were investigating an unrelated incident.

Investigators with the South Plains Auto Theft Taskforce in Texas contacted Goshen police at 8:28 p.m. Friday about a possible stolen vehicle within Goshen city limits. Goshen police recovered the vehicle and an investigation is ongoing.

Goshen police were called to the intersection of Kercher and Violett roads at 9:40 p.m. Saturday for a report of a boat in the middle of the road. With assistance, police removed the boat.

Goshen Parks Department reported to Goshen police at 9:15 a.m. Friday that someone vandalized the Mill Street Park building, 212 Prospect Ave.

A 45-year-old woman reported to Goshen police at 2:54 p.m. Friday the theft of a trash can from the 500 block of Glenwood Drive.

Tri State Compressed Air, 1608 Eisenhower Drive South, reported to Goshen police at 8:14 a.m. Friday a fraudulent use of a credit card.
