Reconstruction on Highway 20 set to wrap up soon after almost 2 years

SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KCAU) — The reconstruction project on Highway 20 is is set to wrap up on Nov. 22, ending nearly two years of inconvenience for commuters.

"We recognized the challenges folks had with getting their commutes every day or getting through that construction zone," Jessica Felix with the Iowa DOT said. "A four-mile construction zone is a long time."

Felix told KCAU 9 what drivers can expect once the highway interchange fully reopens.

"There will be a traditional diamond, so there's no more winding under the bridge," she said. "And coming up, be aware of the new signage. But you have the new traffic signals and you'll be able to have access to all those crossroads for two miles."

Trissa Bottorff, the owner of Movillatte, said that she's looking forward to the end of construction.

"Its been a lot, I would say it's definitely slowed down the ability to get to Sioux City faster," Bottorff said. "It's definitely affected my business in a way of when I go to get supplies for the business – coffee, milk, things like that. So that has been kind of a struggle, but all in all, I'm happy it's almost done."

Another Moville resident said that the repairs and renovations needed to be done.

"The conditions of the highway and some sections of it was getting pretty rough, pretty bumpy," resident Jeff Krejci said. "Like on this side of Lawton, it was getting really rough and bumpy, and the grating that they did has leveled it out a little bit. We don't have a steep valley or as big as hills to go up and down the pavements and the roadway, and the improvements are well worth the wait."

Felix said crews will be working on replacing two small sections of asphalt. Weather permitting, Siouxland drivers will be able to experience the new interchange soon.
