BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) - Residents are being urged to check and see if they're owed unclaimed money after millions of dollars in tax refunds went uncashed recently. According to the Louisiana State Treasurer's Office, state income tax refunds totalling $8.7 million went uncashed and are available to be claimed. Officials said the money likely belongs to people who inadvertently lost track of their tax refunds. "This $8.7 million belongs to the people of Louisiana, and we are eager to assist them in rightfully claiming their money," said Louisiana State Treasurer John Fleming, M.D. Every year, the Louisiana Unclaimed Property Program receives funds from uncashed state tax refunds. This year, the money that went unclaimed belongs to 29,441 taxpayers in Louisiana. Officials said they are committed to safeguarding the money until it is returned to its rightful owners. To see if you are owed any money, you can go to the website LACashClaim.org , you can use your smartphone to access the LA Wallet App, or you can call the number (888) 925-4127.
