Grants for at-risk heritage sites in Lincolnshire Four sites in the greater Lincolnshire area have been labelled "at risk" and have been awarded funding for repairs and restoration.

Waltham Windmill near Grimsby, The Harlequin in Steep Hill, Lincoln, Hussey Tower in Boston and Horncastle Conservation Area have been included on Heritage England's risk register.

They are among 21 sites in Lincolnshire added to the register that are vacant or deteriorating, or have been vandalised.

The sites have been awarded grants by Historic England for repairs and to get them running again.

Waltham Windmill is at risk due to rainwater seeping in, causing the wood to rot.

The rare Victorian six-sail windmill was in full working order prior to the sails being removed for major maintenance work.

Work has started on repairing it with the help of a £63,120 grant from Historic England.

The Harlequin is at risk because it is vacant.

It was formerly known as The Harlequin Inn and was most recently a second-hand bookshop until its closure a few years ago.

Historic England's grant of £59,656 is funding repairs to buildings next door which will be let as holiday rentals to fund the repairs.

Hussey Tower is a historic Boston landmark at serious risk because of vandalism.

It has been given a grant of £26,119 for urgent repairs and improved security.

Several historic buildings in the Horncastle Conservation Area are vacant and in poor condition, with others having lost traditional features.

Historic England said its aim was to "enhance the characterful historic town".

"This year, we have seen partners and communities come together to help save the historic buildings and places that need it the most," said Historic England regional director Louise Brennan.

"Together, we can save our places and find new ways to enjoy the heritage that people value so much."

Heritage minister Sir Chris Bryant said: "The Heritage at Risk Register plays a vital role in our ongoing mission to protect and preserve our rich heritage across the country.

"Many beloved sites have been removed from the list this year and I hope that more will be saved thanks to their inclusion this year."
