SLMPD looks for porch pirate as survey reveals extent of package thefts

ST. LOUIS – Tiffie Jackson operates a childcare center in the Hyde Park neighborhood of St. Louis with security cameras surrounding her building on Farrar Street. Doorbell cameras are also visible on many nearby homes.

Even with the visible security, Jackson said a porch pirate swiped a package from a neighbor's home earlier this month. Her neighbor told her the package was a gift for his daughter.

"It's definitely not right," Jackson said.

One of the doorbell cameras did provide St. Louis Metropolitan Police with images the department shared on Wednesday .

"We'll catch them," Jackson added.

According to a national survey , one in six Americans has been the victim of porch theft within the past year.

Daily News Most delivery services offer alternatives to help reduce the number of thefts. UPS customers can opt to send packages to UPS Access Point locations.

Jeremiah Willis uses the service and has his packages delivered to a corner convenience store near his home.

"I can just come by and grab it whenever I can," he said.

Gary Willis owns Carrie's Corner Market on Athlone Avenue. His store has been a UPS Access Point for several years.

"No one wants to get their package stolen, especially this time of year," he said.
