PENNSYLVANIA —Those waiting for the first snow of the season in the Keystone State may not have to wait long. A cold air mass with gusty winds is set to move across the area and pull temperatures into the 20s Monday night into Tuesday and produce lake effect snow.

Winds will begin increasing Monday as temperatures are set to drop overnight, forecasters with the National Weather Service and AccuWeather said. Tuesday will be partly cloudy and cold, and blowing snow could make driving conditions difficult in parts of the state.

Expect highs Tuesday to top out in the low-to-mid 30s, possibly reaching 40 in coastal areas — though it will feel colder. Wind chills will register in the 20s in places, as wind gusts will be in the 25 to 35 mile-per-hour range, said the National Weather Service.

As of the latest forecast, flurries and snow squalls are most likely to affect northern Pennsylvania and the Poconos. A light dusting is possible, but no major accumulation is expected.

“The main theme will be the coldest air of the season so far, and there will be an added wind chill as well," said the National Weather Service office in Mount Holly.

"It's possible the tail end of a few lake effect streamers could make it into portions of Chester County, the southern Poconos, and northwest New Jersey, bringing a few snow showers," the NWS said.

AccuWeather forecasters added that snow squalls can quickly reduce visibility, especially on the interstate. The bulk of lake-effect snow looks to be affecting northern Pennsylvania, upstate New York, and parts of Vermont according to the AccuWeather forecast.

"There is growing concern that in addition to snow showers encompassing much of the interior Northeast on Tuesday, that snow squalls may be more expansive compared to the rest of the lake-effect event," added AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Tyler Roys.

Wednesday will also be cold, forecasters added, before a bit of a warm-up Thursday and a chance of rain this weekend.

Here is a look at the forecast through Wednesday for southeastern Pennsylvania from the National Weather Service:

Monday: Partly sunny, with a high near 47. West wind 10 to 15 mph.
