St. Landry Crime Stoppers may soon accept tips concerning litter violations

ST. LANDRY PARISH, La. () — St. Landry Parish Crime Stoppers is a tool used in the fight against crime. Soon it may also be used in the battle against litter.

Maj. Mark LeBlanc, of the St. Landry Parish Sheriff's Office , said the parish is experiencing a "massive issue" with littering and dumping.

"Much of this ends up in the drainage canals that serve the drainage portion of this entire parish," LeBlanc said.

Because there is a lack of surveillance cameras in rural parts of the parish, community tips can help law enforcement officers find who is clogging drainage paths and roadways.

With that idea in mind, LeBlanc has visited with the St. Landry Parish Council and municipalities like Eunice to share the idea of incorporating Crime Stoppers to offer a monetary reward for sending in those types of tips.

KLFY Daily Digest "Using the recognition and the success that St. Landry Crime Stoppers has had over the many years would certainly bring to light not only the issue but also provide a mechanism by which we can attack the issue. We will start issuing citations based on viable information that gets turned in to us," LeBlanc said.

LeBlanc said the idea has already gained support from District Attorney Chad Pitre , who would prosecute violators, and the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries , who would assist in issuing citations.

"Instead of bringing a few hundred law enforcement officers into this, I want to bring in nearly 90,000 citizens that live in Saint Landry Parish into this issue, allow them the ability and provide them the mechanism by which they can report it and possibly receive a tip reward when we take enforcement action against this," LeBlanc said.

LeBlanc hopes to see this initiative take effect in 2025.
