St. Petersburg police are investigating the death of a 1-year-old boy who was left in a car parked at a day care center.

Officers responded about 5:15 p.m. Wednesday after the boy was found unresponsive in a car parked at the Kindercare Bayfront Child Development Center, 800 6th Ave. S., according to the St. Petersburg Police Department. He was pronounced dead there.

Detectives learned that when the boy's father went to pick up the child at the center, staff told him he had not attended that day, police said. Soon after, the boy was found unresponsive in the back of the car. He had been there all day, according to police.

Detectives were still investigating Thursday to determine what happened and if anyone will face criminal charges.

No other details have been released.
