Pavement markings faded and not being retouched. That's what's driving one viewer crazy this week!

Fernie F. sent a message to KFOX14:

I am a driving instructor and was watching your segment. I've been getting many remarks about how the City of El Paso does a very poor job of re-stripping the road i.e., white lines, yellow lines and other pavement markings I know our student drivers always comment about this situation. Streets are Hondo Pass in the area of the Neighborhood Walmart and even on many parts of Dyer.

According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, pavement markings help people indicate which part of the road to use, provide information about conditions ahead, and indicate where passing is allowed, which can make it hard for drivers when markings are either fading or not visible.

KFOX14 spoke to the City of El Paso Transportation Manager Fernie Najera, who said his team conduct regular inspections of the roadways around the city.

"We monitor the conditions of pavement markings on the roadways, which helps us identify the faded markings that need attention. Also, by having a maintenance schedule, which outlines the specific areas that we need to check and mark for the maintenance," said Najera.

The estimated time for pavement markings to be redone depends on several factors, such as weather conditions, existing projects and resources available.

"So after we receive the report, the city may take a few days to assess the pavements marking conditions, and if it needs to be redone, we add it to the schedule, which can take anywhere from several weeks to several months. As far as the actual installation of pavement markings, it typically occurs within a day or two, but it also depends on the scope of work, said Najera."

People can submit road concerns to the City of El Paso, and can keep track of the status of the case by either calling 311 or by creating an account online on the city's website.

"We do have a lot of streets that we maintain, and I encourage the public to call 311 and report any problems, which also helps us to keep the streets maintained and in good condition," said Najera.
