BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (WTNH) — Six adults are displaced and one firefighter was evaluated after a multi-family house went up in flames early Sunday morning in Bridgeport. Bridgeport firefighters responded to 555 Capitol Ave. shortly after 4:30 a.m. to battle a fire found on the rear of the structure. Fire officials say a "mayday" alert was initiated for a firefighter who was struck by debris while combatting the flames. That firefighter was evaluated at a local hospital and later cleared for full duty. The American Red Cross also responded to the fire to assist six adults who are now displaced. The fire remains under investigation by the Fire Marshal's Office. For the latest news, weather, sports, and streaming video, head to WTNH.com. The U.S. Justice Department is demanding records related to the shooting of an Illinois woman who was killed in her home by a sheriff's deputy as it investigates how local authorities treat Black residents and people with behavioral disabilities. The government made a list of demands in dozens of categories in a letter to the Sangamon County Sheriff's Office, dated Thursday. "The Sheriff's Office, along with involved county agencies, has engaged in discussions and pledged full cooperation with the Department of Justice in its review," Sheriff Paula Crouch said Friday. A federal appeals court in New Orleans on Friday temporarily limited the scope of a ruling that Louisiana's law requiring public schools to post the Ten Commandments in all classrooms next year is unconstitutional. U.S. District Judge John deGravelles' ruling that the law is unconstitutional remains in effect under the order from the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. State attorneys said in an emergency stay motion filed Wednesday that deGravelles' finding that the commandments posting requirement is unconstitutional only affects five local school systems that are defendants in the case. Donald Trump's choice of Matt Gaetz to be attorney general has many Justice Department employees reeling, worried not only about their own jobs but the future of the agency that the Trump loyalist has railed against. The president-elect's pick of the Florida Republican sent a shock throughout the Cabinet department, considering Gaetz's lack of experience in law enforcement and the fact that he was once the subject of a federal sex trafficking investigation. The names of well-regarded veteran lawyers had circulated as possible contenders for the job, but Gaetz's selection was broadly interpreted as an indication of the premium that Trump places on personal loyalty and Trump's desire to have a disruptor lead a department that for years investigated and ultimately indicted him.
