PHOENIX (AZFamily) — A person is dead after he was struck by a car on a busy Phoenix freeway, forcing temporary closures right before rush hour traffic on Monday morning.

Department of Public Safety troopers told Arizona's Family around 12:30 a.m., they received reports of a man on the freeway throwing objects at passing vehicles on southbound I-17 near the Durango curve. The man was then struck by a car and died at the scene.

Troopers say the driver involved stayed at the scene and was not impaired.

A heavy backup was seen around 4:30 a.m. on I-17 near the Stack stretching to the Durango curve. The freeway reopened just before 5 a.m.
