WILKES-BARRE – On Sunday, Plains showed exactly why it was the top seed in
the Wyoming Valley American Legion double-elimination tournament.

It took advantage of eight Nanticoke errors and pounded out 18 runs on 11
hits, en route to an 18-3 victory in five innings at Artillery Park to
eliminate Nanticoke from the tournament.
“We had all those errors on defense and our pitchers didn’t throw strikes,”
Nanticoke coach George Graboske said. “When you play against the most talented
team in the league and the best hitting team in the league, and you make eight
errors and put a bunch of guys on with walks, you’re not going to win.”

Plains will play at 5:30 p.m. today against Plymouth. Plymouth lost to
Greater Pittston 11-7 on Sunday in the winners bracket game. During the
regular season, Plains defeated Plymouth twice in three games.

Plains scored twice in the first inning to open a 2-0 lead. Then after
Nanticoke battled back with one run in the top of the second to cut the lead
in half, Plains scored six runs in the bottom of the third followed by another
six-run outburst in the fourth to bust the game wide open.

Highlighting the scoring for Plains were monstrous three-run home runs by
Chris Sedon and Steve Earley.

Sedon was also the winning pitcher. He allowed two earned runs and struck
out three in four innings.

“I didn’t’ have my best stuff today,” the Coughlin senior said. “I just put
it over the plate and made my defense do the work and they did a great job.”

Sedon and Matt Leskiw each had two hits to lead the Plains offense and Bob
Cirko tripled.

“We just came out and wanted to make contact,” Sedon added. “We knew that’s
all we had to do because the field was wet from all the rain and it worked out
for us.”

A.J. Albee was the top hitter for Nanticoke with a pair of singles.
