WILKES-BARRE – Chris Kish’s two-run single highlighted a nine-run first
inning and Gary Smith’s two-run homer sealed a seven-run third for
Wilkes-Barre, which won the winners bracket with a five-inning, 17-1 defeat of
Plains in Wyoming Valley Junior American Legion playoff action on Monday.

Plains will face Back Mountain at 5:30 p.m. today at Artillery Park in a
losers bracket game.
The winner will advance to face Wilkes-Barre at 5:30 p.m. tomorrow at
Artillery Park. Wilkes-Barre must win just once more to capture the title.

Mike Scocozzo and John Perada both went 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs
scored and Mike Burns went 2-for-4 with two RBI.

Matt Metzger went 3-for-3 for Plains.


Back Mountain 3, Swoyersville 2

WYOMING – Trailing by two runs going into the bottom of the sixth inning,
Mike Prater slammed a solo homer and Chris Klaiss delivered a two-run single
to give Back Mountain the victory.

Myer Messinger pitched a complete-game four-hitter for Back Mountain.

Matt Ruch added a triple for Back Mountain.

Back Mountain 7, Plains 4

PLAINS – Dave Harding went 2-for-2 with a double and three runs batted in
to lead Back Mountain over Plains.

Kevin Racemus and Matt Kapitula each scored a pair of runs for the winners,
and Pat McHugh also drove in a pair. Joe Lambert got the victory.

Bob Cirko went 2-for-3 with a double, one run scored and an RBI for Plains.


Nanticoke 12, Hazleton 1

NANTICOKE – Dan Nearhouse and Frank Sokola each knocked in four runs as
Nanticoke won a game that ended after five innings because of the 10-run rule.

Nearhouse had a two-run homer and walked twice with the bases loaded.

Sokola plated three runs in the five-run fifth with a double. George Jones
was the winning pitcher, striking out six and giving up only five hits.
