SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KCAU) — The superintendent of the Sioux City Community School District will be retiring next summer.

Dr. Rod Earleywine announced Monday his intent to retire from his position in June 2025. He made the announcement during Monday night's school board meeting.

Dr. Earleywine joined the district as interim superintendent in July 2022, and was then named permanent superintendent in Jan. 2023. He was previously the Sergeant Bluff-Luton Community School District superintendent for 15 years.

"I am grateful for the opportunity to serve as superintendent in the Sioux City Community School District," Earleywine said in a statement. "Over the last couple of years, I have been privileged to work alongside very dedicated educators and administrators, all with the common goal of ensuring students reach their highest potential. While I look forward to my next role – spending more time with my family and friends, my role with Sioux City Community Schools continues. We have important work to accomplish this school year, and I am committed to building on the success we have already achieved over the next several months."

The school's board of directors plans to get a recruiting firm to conduct a nationwide search for a new superintendent. The board will select a firm in the upcoming weeks.

"[Earleywine's] work has positioned the District for future success, and we are confident that, with the input of district team members, students, families, and community leaders, we can identify an experienced candidate to lead the District for many years to come," SCCSD board president Jan George said in a statement in part. "We are committed to conducting a comprehensive and transparent search for our next superintendent and look forward to starting that process soon."

More information on the search for a new superintendent is expected to be released as the search process comes together.
