The property at 900 Spence St. in East Austin was built in 1915 and was described in city documents as an example of National Folk architecture, specifically the pyramidal cottage style. recommended the property for local landmark designation and eligibility for the National Register of Historic Places. The survey highlighted the house as a key example of early 20th-century residential development in Austin, with its occupancy history reflecting broader settlement patterns in the Willow-Spence neighborhood.The property owner, DMP Austin LLC, submitted a demolition permit application this year and has opposed the historic zoning request. City documents said the house reflects key demographic shifts in the Willow-Spence neighborhood. Originally built by Alfred and Caroline Johnson, it later became home to Martha Ann "Mattie" Speir and then the Romo family, who lived there from 1957 until 2021. The Romos' ownership marked a transition to Mexican American residency in the area, mirroring broader social and economic changes in East Austin throughout the 20th century. The commission was split on their recommendation for the rezoning. "We've lost so much history with regards to African Americans and Hispanics in this city, and the fact that the city staff is recommending it because of its importance I think we should let it go forward and let it play out," Commissioner Alberta Phillips said, noting that those who are opposed to the historic zoning were not present in the meeting. "This is about history, it's about Austin telling its story. ... I think we have a duty and responsibility to really lean into the values of this community especially given the changes we've seen in this neighborhood."While the owner was not present at the meeting, staffers said that they have cited the condition of the building and the cost of preservation in previous meetings as their underlying motivations for opposing the rezoning.Some commissioners expressed concern over the potential for preservation given the current state of the building, with respect to both the architectural and physical integrity, and advocated for developing new housing on the property."I understand the values of historical preservation, but I also understand that buildings don't last forever and sometimes it's OK to lose one or two old homes that are not specifically explicitly historically relevant in and of themselves for progress and for the good of the city," Commissioner Ryan Johnson said. "I think this is one of those cases where the home does espouse a certain style but it is not especially noteworthy in and of itself."After two motions failed to yield a majority vote, the historic zoning request will move forward to City Council without a recommendation from the Planning Commission.

NILES, Ohio (WKBN) — A milestone celebration was held Tuesday for one of Trumbull County's leading providers of medical care. For many of those 100 years, St. Joseph was operated by the Sisters of Humility of Mary. Among the items on display was an early habit worn by the sisters. "Every day when we come to work, we are continuing their legacy by taking care of those that are the most sick, poor and underserved," said President Charlotte Gardiner. Among the crowd was Sister Millie Ely, one of the last of the Humility of Mary Sisters to be the hospital's president. "That 100 years, God's grace and hand had to be in that endeavor, and that's certainly true of St. Joe's," Ely said. From its founding in 1924 until 1996, the hospital was located on Tod Avenue in Warren. It's now located on Eastland Avenue SE. Tino DiCenso contributed to this report.

Hinee's Brew House on 38th in Rock Island plans to close at the end of the year.Greg Hiner announced in a handwritten letter posted on the restaurant's Facebook on Sunday that he is retiring forever. "The time has come, and I will be retiring before the first of the year," the letter reads. "This means Hinee's will close in late December. I want to thank all the great employees through the years, express my gratitude to all the wonderful customers, and acknowledge my family's support. Memories — they will be enjoyed daily and last forever. Thanks, from my heart, Greg."He goes on to say he hopes to see many Legends, Legends' Corner and Hinee's customers before the closing.Hiner opened Hinee's Brew House on 38th in April. It occupies the former Igor's Bistro at 3055 38th St. in Rock Island.He is the former owner of Legends Corner Bar and Grill in both Rock Island and Milan.

The festivities will begin Wednesday, Nov. 20, in Arts Alley, 1719 2nd Ave., with caroling by the Rock Island High School Chamber choir at 3:30 p.m. followed by special remarks and a tree lighting ceremony at 4:30 p.m.It will continue with a holiday window display challenge running Nov. 21- Jan. 1. Shoppers are encouraged to vote for their favorites online as part of the Holiday Display Challenge that includes businesses in downtown Rock Island, Davenport and Bettendorf.Back for a third year, shoppers visiting downtown can also hunt for the holiday train, inspired by Rock Island's rich railroad history. Downtown Rock Island prepares for season with Arts Alley Holiday Market

CALDWELL, Idaho — The Caldwell Event Center District plan is in the works after City Council approval. The plan was developed after conversations about a possible amphitheater in Caldwell. The two plans are now a guide for future developments to happen in the growing city. <li>The Caldwell Event Center District plan was approved by 4 out of 6 council members. </li><li>Two concept plans are to be used to help with future developments. </li><li>Other developments have been in the works for the growing city before the plan was approved. </li>(Below is the transcript from the broadcast story)As I previously reported in November, four out of six Council Members approved the Caldwell Event Center District plan covering 904 total acres on Linden and Blaine, 200 of those being within the focus area.This comes after the council asked staff to come up with a plan for the development, prompted by conversations earlier this year about an amphitheater in Caldwell.After blueprints of what the plans could look like were released by the city's hired consultants local businesses worried they would not be included."This plan just in thinking of the concepts that were provided, it could look very different from, it could be we could go from one direction or the other. The overall goal from the consultant's perspective was to take in community feedback, look in the stakeholder, and take in their feedback as well and devise a concept on how people wanted to see this area grow," said Caldwell Economic Development Director Steve Jenkins.With clarification, the sports concept plan that would upgrade the existing softball fields and a garden concept plan that would highlight the roots of the city were just plans of what Caldwell could look like over the years as development in the city continues to grow."We wanted to create some energy and enthusiasm on how this area could develop, so with that said, the businesses that are currently here and operating if they choose to be here in the next 20-40years have their prerogative to do so," said Jenkins.Now the goal is to use possibly both plans to help staff and council members choose where development would best fit the area."And the city needed something just to give us some direction we wanted to cast a vision for this area," said Jenkins.Before the approval of the Event Center District plan, another possible development was in the works which meets the placement in both plans. The possible development of a 100+ room hotel in front of the Canyon County Fairgrounds.The development has yet to be discussed and will be brought to the Council Members in the next meeting.

But it is so much more than that, it's also a home to local artists and entrepreneurs, but in just a few short weeks they will have to find a new home. <li>Cultivate 712 is described as a downtown hub for all things art, featuring local businesses, artists, and creatives. </li><li>Artist, and vendors expressed the bittersweet feeling of Cultivate 712 closing. </li><li>Debbie Wright explains rising costs and inflation made it difficult to sustain the current rent and operations. </li>"It is going to be really hard for us to find homes for our artists and continue on,"Debbie Wright said. Walking down Austin Avenue, you'll find Cultivate 712.A gallery of creativity traveling along the walls of a 118-year-old building, it's been a space for local artists to showcase their art, and for local vendors. "This is renewed co, this is my clothing company, so most of this stuff behind me is vintage," Abby Williams said. Abby Williams has had a space in the back room at Cultivate 712 for about a year, but as a Waco native, Williams has been coming here for the past seven years, and after she heard the news the building would be closing, not only is she closing her business, she's also losing a small piece of her heart. "I'm not going to stop being an artist, not getting a physical reminder of this space is definitely going to be something I grieve," Williams said. The reason for the gallery's closure, the rent doubled."With raising costs and inflation, it's just so hard to keep up, our rent is going up, as a lot of places downtown are," Wright said. I did reach out to the building owner for comment- but they were not able to get back with me."I walked in here, it was immediately inspired by beautiful art, you know, it I needed a little bit of that inspiration, I had it right here," Publisher Kennisha Griffin said.Kennisha Griffin has her own publishing company on the second floor of the building, and as Griffen reminisces on her time inside a building full of originality and innovation, she knows it's nothing with the people."We all worked really well among each other, so I definitely am gonna miss that, And I hope that in the next space where I am, you know that that just continues to live through us all, where-ever we go we'll take our little bit of sunshine to other places and juts continue paying it forward," Griffin said.January 15th is the final day you'll be able to walk through Cultivate 712's doors. They do have plans to attend popup shops as they are on the hunt for a new location. They plan to rebrand as Cultivate Waco. Coming up at the end of the year, Cultivate 712 is hosting a Casino Night on December 31st at 9:30pm.

Introspection can be a delicate endeavor. The human mind is capable of incredible extremes, from astonishing compassion to paralyzing despair. It's the exploration of that duality, and just about everything in between, that is central to the struggle that will play out in a one-man show coming to Gulfshore Playhouse. "Every Brilliant Thing" will mark the opening of the new Struthers Studio, the black box theatre space in the Baker Theatre and Education Center.It will also mark a moment in time when Southwest Florida audiences will get a glimpse of the complicated and sometimes comical psychological processes that help a youngster cope with an uncertain future."Every Brilliant Thing," written by Duncan MacMillan with Jonny Donahoe, tells the story of a man who, from the age of 7, strives to cope with his mother's depression and suicide attempts by creating a list of every- thing that makes life worth living. Over the course of his life, he continues adding to the list of those brilliant things, which he shares with his mother when she is feeling down.An example of the simple, yet philosophically insightful items on the list: #1) Ice cream. #2) Kung fu movies. #3) Burning things. #4) Laughing so hard you shoot milk out your nose. #5) Construction cranes. #6) Me.In this one-of-a-kind production, Jeffrey Binder stars as the Storyteller. The accomplished actor-writer-producer returns to the Gulfshore Playhouse, where he served as associate artistic director for six seasons. He has performed on Broadway, off-Broadway, regionally and in London's West End, as well as on television and in film. His credits include "The Lion King," "Mary Poppins" and "My Fair Lady," however, the role he may draw the most inspiration and confidence from is a previous solo show at Gulfshore Playhouse. "It is a very different experience. Regardless of whether there are people on stage, you always have a living audience in front of you," Binder said. "That's what makes live theater incredible. When it's just you and the audience, a one-person show allows you to connect in a very different way, which is exciting."Performing a one-man stage show is a daunting task that requires immense courage, creativity and vulnerability. Exploring the complexities of life through a solo performance presents a unique set of challenges that can push an artist to the limits of versatility and expressive range."It's a wonderful thing for an actor to do a one-person show because it really exercises your entire acting muscle," Binder said. "It's between you and the audience and you can't let up. I love that connection because it's so much more personal."It doesn't get more personal than depression and suicide. In "Every Brilliant Thing," the Storyteller begins by telling the audience about the first time he learned his mother was in the hospital after an attempt to take her own life. That began a lifelong commitment to making a list of every brilliant thing in the world worth living for. The range of emotions evoked runs the gamut of depression and hope, uncertainty and change, confusion and joy, heartbreak and anger, relationships and solitude, and guilt and forgiveness. This passionate exploration of the human condition will be the first performance to grace the new Struthers Studio in the Baker Theatre and Education Center. The black box theatre space is the perfect venue for a production that depends on intimacy and audience focus. "We were incredibly lucky to be able to get her to be a part of this."Building a rapport with the audience is vital, so it is incumbent on the artist to create a profound connection. This solo journey requires dedication but offers transformative rewards for both performer and spectator."It's interesting, audiences have different moods and it's a fascinating thing to experience," Binder said. "In a one-person show, it's almost as though they become one living organism and their mood fills the space. It's definitely noticeable and it definitely affects you. Sometimes, the best Christmas gift is just surviving the holidays. The Studio Players presents "A Nice Family Christmas" by Phil Olson, a comically relatable PHOTO reminder of what can happen when family dynamics and expectations collide.When Carl, a struggling newspaper reporter who /has just been assigned a story to write about a typical family Christmas, travels home to spend the holidays with his dysfunctional family, secrets unravel and holiday mayhem ensues.Veteran director Paula Keenan has enjoyed the challenge of learning the personalities of each cast member throughout the rehearsal process. She believes the skill of the actors and the ease of their rapport are essential in helping audiences relate to the quirky characters."I direct a lot. People who work at their craft, I like to work with. And I've seen people sitting in here working with their craft, whether they're new to the theater or not, and I appreciate that," she said. "I think the basic message that everybody takes away from this is just take time to love one another. That says it all, and that way, you can wrap it up in the big red bow at the end. In the hands of less skilled actors, it wouldn't play. And that's why I'm so grateful to have experienced actors along with people who've not done a show and younger ones."Allan Reeves, who plays Carl, makes his stage debut in "A Nice Family Christmas." "This is my first time in anything. So, it's completely new. It's a great learning experience," Reeves said. "Even in this short amount of time, it's really opened my eyes to how much more goes into all of this stuff. Instead of just always sitting in the audience and thinking, 'How hard is it to remember a line?' Oh, it's incredibly hard. It's a lot of fun."Bella Amatuccio portrays Carl's sarcastic sister Stacy, who is guarding a secret of her own."I haven't done a play since middle school. So, this is a nice little debut back into that. And I really love the script. I love how it reads, kind of like a sitcom almost, and I'm really excited to portray my character and be with this cast," she explained.Carl's brother Michael, played by Kevin Velando, has a gambling problem that he tries to hide from his wife, Jill, who is portrayed by Jennifer Toral."There are funny things that go on with Michael's character because he has an obsession with plate collection and gambling. He went to rehab twice, and then he's going through some serious marital problems with his wife. And he's a doctor, so he's supposed to be the one that's most squared away," said Velando.To add to the stress of their relationship, Jill is struggling with insecurities that compound their problems."Jill's character can't have kids, and she's taking fertility medication and things like that because she's having trouble having kids, and that's putting a strain on their relationship. I want him to prove that he loves me instead of putting all his attention into all these other things," Toral explained.Veteran local actress Ellen Erikson Cooper plays Grandma and doles out snarky observations and unfiltered advice to everyone in the family."Grandma has a heart. She just wants everybody not to get trampled on in life. She wants the best for everybody, and she may not have a very gracious way of doing it, but that's the way she grew up," said Cooper.Real-life husband and wife Victor and Patti Caroli play Uncle Bob and Carl's widowed mother."I love playing Uncle Bob. Well, I love him and I don't. But one of the things I like about him is he's this crazy, drugged, old guy, and he doesn't give a damn what he says. He's kind of the tragic figure in the piece because he's the one guy that has had a really, really bad life," said Vic Caroli.Patti Caroli is excited to work with her husband and Cooper, a longtime friend. The role of the mother in "A Nice Family Christmas" is a departure from the comedic roles she normally plays."I think I would have what you call the straight-man part in this show. I'm kind of the anchor of the household," Patti Caroli said. "All I want is a nice family Christmas. And I have these kids who are bickering. And I have Uncle Bob showing up unannounced. And then I got my mom who has no filter for anything she says. And all I want is just a little bit of quiet and peace on earth and goodwill towards men. And some lutefisk (codfish). Lutefisk figures into this show. It's big in Minnesota. This play takes place in Minneapolis. There's a lot of references to Scandinavia.""It tastes like soap," quipped Cooper."You know what's hard for me in this show? This mom doesn't hug anybody. I'm Italian. I hug everybody. So even when they try to hug me, I can't hug back. And that's hard. I do get a few good digs in even though I'm a straight man. I think we play well off each other," Patti Caroli described.Despite old conflicts and unresolved tension, humor softens the edges of difficult truths and makes it easier for the family members to address their issues and heal."The comedy helps this family have the deep conversations that are hard to get to. A lot of people use comedy and being funny as a defense mechanism because they don't really know how to open the hard conversations up. Everybody's a tragic character in their own way, and we get through it by comedy, and we segue through all these hardships with a joke here and there," explained Velando.As chaos unfolds and it seems like the holiday spirit might be doomed, the characters find unexpected ways to reconnect."It's a comedy. It's not a farce. We resolve a lot in an hour and 30 minutes, and the rapport you get between the characters is a metaphor for what's going on in the world today, and I hope that people take that away from the show to be a little kinder to each other at Christmas and the rest of the year, too," Keenan said. "I'd like to say that we're doing all of this for love, but the Studio Players need support and money.
