Local college volleyball highlights and scores (11-19-24)

<p>St. Ambrose University's Alexa Orozco was named the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference Freshman of the Year as she was one of four Fighting Bees to earn All-CCAC honors for the recently completed season.</p><p>Those three first-teamers were topped by former Orion High School standout Mackenzie Grafton and also included Kenia Diaz Vega. Grace Beitzel earned second-team All-CCAC accolades.</p><p>Those four standouts helped the Fighting Bees to a 16-16 season that included a semifinal appearance in the CCAC Tournament.</p><p>Grafton, a graduate student, posted 424 kills, 51 service aces, and 337 digs this season. The former CCAC Player of the Year is a two-time First-Team All-CCAC selection. The attacker led SAU with her kill count, having 149 more kills than anyone else on the squad. Grafton also led SAU With her 51 service aces.</p><p>Her 424 kills lead the conference, which has three teams still alive in tournament play.</p><p>Orozco (Fr., Puerto Rico) was a standout for the Bees as she put down 208 kills over 32 matches in earning her league honor.</p><p>Her all-around play shows in her 249 digs and 21 assists for the Bees. Orozco rallied for a season-high 19 kills when SAU hosted No. 17 Viterbo on Sep. 13. She is the first Bee to earn the award since the program joined the conference prior to the 2015 season.</p><p>Diaz Vega, a defensive specialist, logged a CCAC-leading 601 digs in pacing a formidable SAU defense. The graduate transfer also from Puerto Rico found herself as the CCAC Libero of the Year and a first-team all-conference player last fall. Diaz Vega appeared in all 32 matches for St. Ambrose.</p><p>Both Diaz Vega and Grafton played in all 117 sets this season for SAU, the only two Bees to accomplish that feat.</p><p>Beitzel (Jr., OH, Geneva, Ill.) put down 275 kills this season throughout 106 sets. This year was a breakout season for her as she was involved with 284.5 SAU points. After 732 total attempts, Beitzel registered a .250 hitting percentage (third on the team).</p><h3>Augie standout honored</h3><p>For the second year in a row, Augustana College women's volleyball standout Emily Schipper was named to the All-CCIW second team.</p><p>Schipper, a fifth-year performer from Fulton, Ill., led the 10-20 Vikings in kills (418) and kills per set (3.67) in 29 matches this season. In all matches played, Schipper ranked fifth in the CCIW in kills per set and was third in total kills. In conference contests only, she was sixth in kills per set and third in total kills. Additionally, she posted the seventh-highest kill total in the league this season with 21 against Carroll, which also proved to be the second-highest in a four-set match.</p><p>Defensively, she was second on the Vikings in digs with 295 and ended with a 2.59 average per set. Her 45 total blocks and 24 service aces were third and fourth most on the team.</p><p>This season, Schipper became the all-time leader in program history in kills and is the sixth player in program history to surpass both 1,000 career kills and digs.</p><p>Additionally, Ashley Awbrey (Sr., Orion HS) was named Augie's recipient of the CCIW's RESPECT Award.</p><h3>Hoskins named ARC DPOY</h3><p>Sara Hoskins of Loras College was named the American Rivers Conference volleyball Defensive Player of the Year.</p><p>The Pleasant Valley High School product totaled 128 digs, 379 assists, 26 kills and 22 blocks in conference play during her senior campaign, becoming the first Loras player to earn a major league award since 2015. She was also a first-team selection as a junior.</p><p>Hoskins has been a standout multi-sport athlete at Loras, winning the 2024 NCAA Division III Outdoor Nationals high jump title. She was also a first-team Academic All-American. </p><p>Central College junior libero Colleen Kenney (Taylor Ridge, Alleman HS) and Dubuque graduate student outside hitter Emma Powell (Eldridge, North Scott HS) were named to the all-conference team. Kenney finished with 156 digs and 26 aces in conference matches. Powell totaled 141 digs and 98 kills in league play. </p><p>Nebraska Wesleyan hitter Molly Ramirez (Jr., Pleasant Valley HS) earned honorable mention honors. Ramirez had 79 kills and 54 blocks in ARC matches.</p><h3>Augie's Miller earns wrestling honor</h3><p>Jack Miller, a former Pleasant Valley High School standout now wrestling at Augustana College, was named CCIW Men's Wrestler of the Week.</p><p>The 174-pound sophomore earned the nod after his performances in a dual meet against No. 6 North Central and at the Albion Invitational as he worked his way to a 5-2 record with five pins during the week.</p><p>In the dual against North Central, Miller secured the lone win and six team points with a pin. (WKBN) — Grove City senior Jack Ogoreuc has signed his National Letter of Intent to Division I powerhouse West Virginia University Rifle Team on Nov. 13.</p> Ogoreuc recently represented the United States in the International Shooting Sport Federation Junior World Championships in Lima, Peru in Fall 2024. He was 1 of 5 U.S. male riflemen who represented the U.S. in the tournament.</p> The U.S. placed Fifth in the medal standings with 10 medals and two golds.</p> Ogoreuc also recently competed in the Junior Olympics and the USA Shooting National Championships.</p> He took home two gold medals at the national championships in late June 2024 in Fort Moore, GA. The Grove City standout also won gold in the Under-18 Male Smallbore and the Air Rifle competitions.</p> The Grove City standout joins a program that through Nov. 18 is ranked No. 4 in the nation, according to the Collegiate Rifle Coaches Association poll.</p> The Mountaineers are the winningest Rifle program in the country with 19 NCAA National Championships. WVU was most recently the runner-up to 2024 NCAA National Champions TCU in March.</p><i></i></p>

<p>Back on top for the first time since 2018! The Air Academy boys soccer team won the 4A state title and have earned themselves a feature as our Athlete of the Week. </p><p>The Kadets captured the program's sixth state championship with a 1-0 win over top seeded Mullen. Air Academy was an underdog coming into this season, but tuned out the outside noise and locked in to finish the season as the best team in 4A. </p><p>"We had one goal and that was just to be the best we could be," said Air Academy's Head Coach Espen Hosoien. "We never really set out thinking we were going to win the state championship. There's been some state titles before where we were expected to win. This was not that group but we decided to work as hard as we can and see how far that gets us."</p><p>The game winning goal came from senior Ben Brown in the 63 minute of the match. Brown shot a laser from just across midfield and got it up and over the goalkeeper for the eventual game winning goal.</p><p>"It almost feels surreal like I want to pinch myself," said Brown. "I wasn't even sure it went in at the start. but it just went in and I mean I went to go celebrate. It felt amazing to be in that moment."</p><p>"That was a hit that would probably end up in Pueblo if the goal wasn't there," said Hosoien. "He can hit those and the emotions that go through you when that happens is pretty phenomenal."</p><p>Coach Hosoien has now been a part of five out of the programs six titles and he says the feeling never gets old. It's been five years since they have been to the title game, and six years since they've won it. He says it was time for them to do it again. </p><p>...</p><p>

Golden State Warriors star Draymond Green was critical of the Grizzlies ' response to him tripping rookie center Zach Edey in Friday's win, calling out Memphis head coach Taylor Jenkins for being "too emotional."</p> The foul, which was upgraded to a flagrant 1 the following day after a league review, occurred in the third quarter after Green lost the ball on a drive. Edey had picked up the ball and threw an outlet pass when Green's left elbow got tangled with Edey's right foot and the Grizzlies center tripped over Green's sprawled out leg.</p> Jenkins and Edey both said the play should've been reviewed for a flagrant foul during the game, with Jenkins intimating that Green broke a "code" in the league with the trip.</p> "...You run into the media crying about a foul that, c'mon bro, with your 7-3 rookie," Green said on his podcast, "The Draymond Green Show with Baron Davis . "So guess what you just taught your 7-3 rookie? How to be emotional and run to the media talking about a foul. We bigs, we big men. You don't run to the media talking about the foul, you a big man."</p> The play was ruled a transition take foul at the time and was not reviewed.</p> "So I know there's a code in this league, and I don't understand how that wasn't reviewed," Jenkins said after Friday's game, in refence to the foul. "Very disappointing."</p> Edey said the trip "definitely wasn't a basketball play."</p> The Warriors and Grizzlies have a history, dating back to a heated Western Conference semifinals series in 2022 that the Warriors won in six games.</p> "You got janky Taylor Jenkins, who's a softie, goes out and at some point ... we beat y'all in the NBA playoffs because he was too emotional," Green said. "And so then his team followed that and they follow your lead and collapse because they couldn't deal with the emotions of it. But they coach couldn't deal with the emotions of it."</p>

<p> Ben Simmons ' offensive passivity has been problematic since he joined the Brooklyn Nets . The three-time All-Star has pointed to debilitating back injuries in recent years when asked about his lack of aggressiveness. Yet, despite entering this season with a self-proclaimed clean bill of health , his deficiencies are more glaring than ever.</p><p>Simmons is averaging 5.7 points per game while attempting 6.7 field goals per 36 minutes, both career lows. His free-throw numbers are even more concerning regarding his refusal to utilize his 6-foot-10, 240-pound frame. He's attempted four total free throws through 11 appearances, the third-fewest among 125 NBA guards to play over 20 minutes per game this season.</p><p>Nets head coach Jordi Fernandez responded to the eye-opening statistic ahead of Tuesday's matchup with the Charlotte Hornets.</p><p>"He's very good at avoiding fouls. I don't know. He hasn't shot free throws," Fernandez said. "He's a great playmaker, he makes us play fast... If you're that good at kicking the ball ahead and finding your teammates in transition, it's sometimes hard to find yourself dribbling into crowds. Like I said before, I want him to be aggressive and attempt more shots, so that's my goal right now, to get his attempts to go up, but I'm not worried about the free throws."</p><p>"It's like one step at a time. Probably if he attempts more shots, maybe he gets fouled more, I don't know. But I'm not gonna be worried about it. Right now, what I know is when he's on the court, we play faster in the fullcourt, and that, to me, is important for the group. So he makes us better."</p><p>Simmons' free throw disparity isn't due to a lack of opportunities. The 28-year-old has the ball in his hands as much as nearly any NBA player when on the floor. He's averaging 2.61 touches per minute, the highest on the Nets and the eighth-highest among the NBA's top 50 players in touches.</p><h2>Ben Simmons must improve offensive aggressiveness to maintain role with Nets</h2><p>While Fernandez says he's not concerned about Simmons' lack of free throws, the Aussie's refusal to attack the basket as a lead ball-handler has hampered Brooklyn's offense. The Nets are scoring seven fewer points per 100 possessions with Simmons on the floor, the worst on/off swing of any player to play over 200 minutes.</p><p>Due to Simmons' lack of shot creation, Fernandez has strayed away from playing him alongside a non-shooting center in Nic Claxton. The coach has deployed the former No. 1 pick as a point center in a five-out offense. He will face a decision on Simmons' role when Claxton and Day'Ron Sharpe return from injury in the coming weeks.</p><p>Brooklyn also welcomed back Trendon Watford over the last two games. The 23-year-old plays a similar role to Simmons as a 6-foot-8 ball-handler. Watford closed Tuesday's 116-115 win over the Charlotte Hornets over Simmons, scoring two clutch baskets in the final minutes.</p><p>After going scoreless on 0-of-3 shooting during Sunday's loss to the New York Knicks, Simmons showed marginal offensive improvement against Charlotte. He scored 10 points on 5-of-7 shooting in 26 minutes, reaching double figures for the first time this season.</p><p>He'll need to sustain that impact over an extended stretch – something he has yet to do during his Nets tenure – if he hopes to warrant minutes in a crowded frontcourt rotation.</p>

<p>Montana State is no stranger to success, and the university's rugby team is proving that as they head to nationals—but they need the community's help to get there.</p><p>"We're a quiet team. You know, people don't know we even exist sometimes," says Head Coach Joseph Williams.</p><p>"Looking to really prove ourselves," says senior Finn Russell.</p><p>The MSU men's rugby team is coming off its eighth conference championship and is heading to nationals.</p><p>"So, we're still trying to improve on that every year," says Russell.</p><p>Last year the team made nationals but was taken out in round 8.</p><p>"We get bumped out. And then you know you have to play the next day. So we would end up in the top ten in the country. But last year was our first year breaking that," says Williams.</p><p>Williams says while the loss was hard, he and the team used that as motivation this year.</p><p>"It's like, alright, well, let's not get upset that we lost. That's not getting us anywhere. So we immediately sit down after the game and say, why did we lose," says Williams.</p><p>The momentum is there for the team going 6-1 this fall. Their next hurdle is getting the team to St Louis for nationals.</p><p>"We're a club sport, which means we win and we make it to nationals. We got to raise $20,000 quick," says Williams.</p><p>For Senior Connor Kelly there is a lot to prove, especially being a team from out west.</p><p>"People are always like, 'What is Montana? What are you guys doing here?'" says Kelly.</p><p>"They are from either Minnesota, Chicago, or Iowa. So we're one of the only teams really from the West," adds Russell.</p><p>Ranked 9th nationally, winning and drive is in the team's DNA.</p><p>"We won our conference for the eighth time in a row. So there's always just been an expectation that we dominate this part of the circuit," says Russell. "Being able to see that we had success in our scheme, and just being able to kind of trust our teammates."</p><p>With their eyes set on a national championship, this team is aiming to put Bobcat rugby on the map.</p><p>"Growing up that I would be able to represent any university at a national level, so it's been really cool to be able to wear the Bobcat with pride," says Kelly.</p>

1999: Skippy’s in Chatfield opens

Mandatory Credit: Kirby Lee-Imagn Images </span><p>Southern California continues a six-game, season-opening homestand in Los Angeles on Wednesday, looking to bounce back from its first loss of the campaign when it welcomes San Jose State.</p><p>USC (3-1) scored just two points over the final six-plus minutes of its 71-66 loss to Cal on Sunday. The Trojans' output was their lowest of their first four games under coach Eric Musselman.</p><p>"We've proved multiple times throughout the season through these four games that we can score," USC guard Saint Thomas said. "Sixty-six points is not bad, but we can't give up 71 points in a basketball game and expect to win."</p><p>The 71 points USC gave up to Cal marked a significant improvement from the 95 the Trojans allowed in a three-point win over UT Arlington on Nov. 13. However, USC allowed 42 first-half points vs. Cal, almost completely negating the Trojans' own 43-point effort in the first 20 minutes.</p><p>San Jose State (1-4) has yet to score more than 69 points against a Division I opponent, against which the Spartans are 0-4. They routed NAIA program Life Pacific 93-56 on Nov. 11, behind Sadraque NgaNga's 29 points and 12 rebounds.</p><p>NgaNga, a 6-foot-10 wing, bookended his breakout performance against Life Pacific with scoreless games in losses at Hawaii on Nov. 10 and vs. UC Santa Barbara on Sunday. </p><p>Josh Uduje, a key contributor for Utah State as it won the Mountain West regular-season title in 2023-24, is leading San Jose State with 13.8 points and 5.2 rebounds through the first five games.</p><p>Will McClendon, a former member of USC crosstown rival UCLA, is averaging 10.8 points per game as a Spartan.</p><p>"We don't want to learn from too many losses, but there's light at the end of the tunnel," McClendon told the SJSU Spear following his 12 points vs. UCSB. </p></span>
