Steven Ruch tossed a complete-game three-hitter and struck out eight plus
hit a two-run homer in the third inning to help Back Mountain American defeat
Exeter 5-2 on Monday to advance to the District 16 Little League baseball
winners bracket final.
Back Mountain American will face Back Mountain National at 6 p.m. on Friday
in Dallas. Exeter will travel to Edwardsville/Larksville for a 6 p.m. losers
bracket game tomorrow.
Exeter jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning, but the
winners took control in the third. After Ruch’s blast, Aaron Perez added a
sacrifice fly and Adam Goeringer scored on an error in the third to give Back
Mountain a 4-2 lead.
Travis Debona and Brandon Harding led Back Mountain American with two hits
apiece.
Ryan Carey took the loss on the mound but struck out seven. Dylan Maloney
led Exeter’s offense with two hits.
Ed/Lark 8, West Pittston 2
WEST PITTSTON – Matt Moran struck out 12 and scattered four hits as
Edwardsville/Larksville cruised to the victory.
Josh Longfoot paced Ed/Lark’s offense with a three-run homer, and Jimmy
Micherko added two hits and Nick Eck and George Simms each doubled.
Chris Murphy struck out seven for West Pittston and he and Julian Campenni
each doubled.
Plains 7, Northwest 5
PLAINS TWP. – Winning pitcher Adam Yozwiak struck out 10 batters and helped
his own cause at the plate, going 3-for-3 with a homer and three RBI. One of
his RBI tied the score in the sixth inning, before Bobby Sorokas singled in
the go-ahead scores in the losers bracket game.
Matt Seasock added a pair of hits for Plains.
Ryan Kondrosky went 2-for-2, with a solo homer, for Northwest.
Back Mountain 16, Wyoming/Exeter 6 (5)
WEST WYOMING – Josh Shaver had three hits and Tommy Youells added a pair of
hits to pace Back Mountain.
Bobby Peron was the winning pitcher, and Derrick Martin and Steve Olshenski
doubled.
Avoca/Dupont 9, Ed/Lark/Plymouth 4
AVOCA – Andrew Jackowitz had three hits, including a double, and winning
pitcher Chris Kivak tossed a four-hitter with eight strikeouts to lead
Avoca/Dupont.
Nick Szumski and Mike Hannon had two hits apiece for Avoca/Dupont.
Fort/Swoyer 10, Plains 9
SWOYERSVILLE – Winning pitcher Brian Pugh had a home run and a double to
lead Fort/Swoyer. Chris Hettes pitched the final three innings and also
homered. Lucas Harvey scored three runs.
For Plains, Brian Weiscarger and Kevin Kosek had two hits apiece.
Pittston 17, Duryea 10
DURYEA – Mike Harding had three hits, including a pair of doubles, and
drove in five runs while teammate Nick Bolka had three hits, including a
triple, and drove in four runs to lead Pittston over Duryea.
Cody Rowan had two hits and Mark Fetter tripled in support of winning
pitcher Sam Falcone.
Aaron Black had three hits for Duryea and Mark Prebish added two. Prebish
also struck out nine.
Back Mountain 13, Mountain Top 3 (5)
WRIGHT TWP. – Kristen Baker spun a four-hitter, striking out eight in the
losers bracket final.
Back Mountain will face winners bracket champion Nanticoke at 6 p.m.
tomorrow. If Back Mountain wins, the overall championship game will be 6 p.m.
Thursday in Dallas. Sarah Konopki went 4-for-4, Sara Skammer added three hits
and Meghan Martin contributed a pair of hits.
Alex Plaviak singled and scored twice and teammate Brittany Blass singled
and scored Mountain Top’s other run.
Mountain Top 12, Back Mountain 0 (4)
WRIGHT TWP. — Lindsay Brown threw a one-hitter and hit a home run to lead
Mountain Top over Back Mountain.
Corey Gallagher homered for Mountain Top, and Nicole Iagnemma and Sarah
Andrews tripled.
Kelly Monaghan singled for Back Mountain and pitcher Alyssa Monagahn struck
out six.
Mountain Top will play at Newport/Northwest tomorrow.
Back Mountain 14, Newport/Northwest 13
EXETER – Morgan Kane hit a bases-clearing triple in the top of the sixth
inning to put Back Mountain up by the one run it would win by. Kane finished
with five hits, including the go-ahead triple, a pair of doubles and seven
RBI.
Nicole Giampietro came in to pitch for Back Mountain after
Newport/Nanticoke jumped out to a 10-0 lead in the first inning, and allowed
only three more runs on just a pair of hits.
Back Mountain will play Nanticoke in the finals at 6 p.m. today in Exeter.
South Wilkes-Barre 2, Honey Pot 1
WILKES-BARRE – Matt Morio tosses a complete-game and struck out eight to
earn the win to lead South Wilkes-Barre.
Steve Sulcoski had a pair of hits and drove in both runs. Steve Smith
doubled and Stephen Zoronski hit a pair of singles.
Josh Niewinski tripled and scored for Honey Pot and Mark Davis added two
hits.
