HARBOR SPRINGS, MI – Pipe bombs were found in a box of items donated Wednesday to a Northern Michigan thrift shop, police said.

Around 2:15 p.m., troopers from the Michigan State Police Gaylord Post, the MSP Bomb Squad and a canine team were dispatched to New Beginnings Thrift Shop in Harbor Springs for a report of several pipe bombs being found.

A worker had picked up a donated box containing numerous tools and began moving things around to see what all was in the box, police said. They discovered several items that appeared to be pipe bombs.

The bomb squad took an X-ray of the suspect items and found that one of them contained a fuse and powder; the bomb was disabled and disposed of.

The canine team performed a sweep for explosives at the thrift ship and in the surrounding area. No other explosives were found.

This incident remains under investigation.
