Wilkes, King’s Split Doubleheader

WILKES-BARRE TWP. – In a rematch of the 2006 Freedom Conference title game, defending champ Wilkes and host King’s battled to a doubleheader split Saturday at Betzler Fields, as Wilkes won the opener 1-0 before King’s captured the nightcap 2-1.
In the opener, Wilkes (7-7, 1-1) pushed across the only run of the game in the fourth inning when -baseman Melisa Bracone led off with a home run. The score held up as Wilkes pitcher Laurie Agresti stranded 13 King’s runners, allowing nine hits while striking out 10.
King’s (12-6, 3-1) rallied in Game 2, scoring a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth.
Abby Knoblauch came though with an RBI single and Leanne Harvey delivered a sacrifice fly to bring home the game-winning run.

King’s 10-6, Drew 9-1
King’s rallied from an eight-run deficit to win the first game 10-9 over Drew, sweeping a Freedom Conference doubleheader.
Matt Livoy knocked in two runs with a bases-loaded single with no outs in the bottom of the seventh to score the game-winning runs. Freshman Ryan Tychinski picked up the pitching victory in relief.
In the second game, King’s scored six times in the third inning for a 6-1 victory. Jeremy Faust had a two-run double, while Livoy and Mike Venarchick each had RBI doubles. Gracjan Kraszewski and John Venarchick singled in runs. Sophomore pitcher Joe Jenkins threw a complete-game four-hitter.
PSU Wilkes-Barre 4-2, PSU Hazleton 2-12
George Bidwell went 2-for-4 with a home run to lead Penn State Wilkes-Barre to the win in the first game. Dayton Ward went 2-for-3, while Zack Artim was the winning pitcher.
Matt Drumheller went 2-for-4 with a double for Penn State Wilkes-Barre in the nightcap.
FDU-Florham 8-9, Wilkes 1-0
Kyle Follweiler had three hits and Wilkes’ only RBI in the opener. Brad Woznisky took the loss.
In the second game, Chris Mayerski and Matt LoPresto had two hits each for the Colonels.
Wesley 6-12, Misericordia 3-1
Ryan Savka led Misericordia with a solo home run, while both Brian Crum and Brandon Calafut had a double. The Cougars will host Alvernia at 1 p.m. today.
Men’s Lacrosse
DeSales 15, King’s 11
T.J. Lyon and Ryan Lachner scored four goals each for King’s, while Curtis Reinard added two scores and a pair of assists. Chris Landry distributed three assists to aid the Monarch attack. Tim Cassi made six saves in goal while Andrew Bartle stopped eight shots.
Women’s Lacrosse
Widener 17, Wilkes 4
Grace Cavanaugh scored four goals and had two assists to lead Widener.
Wilkes goalkeeper Carrie Stolarick stopped 14 shots.
Men’s Tennis
Wilkes 6, DeSales 3
Cory Golden won in two sets at third singles for Wilkes. Matt Kenney won in three sets after losing a tiebreaker, and John Morgan battled from a set down to win his singles contest.
King’s 5, FDU-Florham 4
Mike Portonova won at No. 1 singles and teamed with Nick Hojsack to earn a doubles victory for King’s.
David Kaluzavich was the only other Monarch to earn wins in both singles and doubles. David Boe posted a three-set win at No.5 singles.

Schappert finishes second
Jude Schappert led the Misericordia men’s team at its season-opening meet at Susquehanna with a second place finish in the high jump.
For the women, Robin Razawich set a school record while finishing ninth in the high jump.

Berwick 6, Northwest 4 Northwest 6, Berwick 1
Berwick and Northwest split an exhibition doubleheader. Breann Shaffer and Alicia Scott hit home runs to power the Bulldogs in game one. Talia Williams got the win for Berwick.
Brittany Piatt and Leah Subsak homered for the Rangers.
In the second game, winning-pitcher Michelle Cragle struck out seven for Northwest. Miranda Sorber delivered two hits, including a double.
